Secretary of State John Kerry called the Senate GOP’s letter to Iran “unconstitutional” on Face the Nation Sunday morning, but said it was too early to tell if the letter would sour negotiations between the U.S. and Iran. The letter, written by freshman Senator Tom Cotton (R-AR) and signed by 46 other Republican senators, warned Iran that any deal negotiated over its nuclear program would be null and void without congressional approval. Tehran dismissed the letter as a propaganda ploy , while members of Cotton’s party critiqued it as foolish and counterproductive . RELATED: Tapper Grills Sen. Cotton: Are You Trying to ‘Sabotage’ Obama’s Iran Deal? “This letter was absolutely calculated directly to interfere with these negotiations,” Kerry said. “It specifically inserts itself directly to the leader of another country, saying ‘Don’t negotiate with these guys, because we’re going to change this.’ Which, by the way, is not only contrary to Constitution with respect to the executive’s right to negotiate, but is incorrect, because they cannot change an executive agreement. …That is unprecedented.” CBS News’ Margaret Brennan asked if Kerry had any intention of apologizing to Iran on the Senate’s behalf. “Not on your life,” Kerry replied. “I’m not going to apologize for an unconstitutional, unthought-out action by somebody who has been in the United States Senate for 60-some days. That’s just inappropriate.” Watch the clip below, via CB
