AP Photo On Monday morning, news broke that Trevor Noah would be replacing Jon Stewart as the host of Comedy Central’s The Daily Show. The first response most people had was: Who now? Let’s get that part out of the way. Noah is a South African comedian and actor who got his start on soap operas, then hosted reality television before moving to comedy full time in 2008. The 31-year-old made his first appearance on The Daily Show back in December, offering an outsider’s perspective on the American experience. Naming him as Stewart’s successor is a brilliant move. For a long time, no one had any idea what would happen to The Daily Show after Jon Stewart left. His ability to bring anger, humor and intelligence to exposing the hypocrisy of American media and politics was all but impossible to recreate. When Stewart took a leave of absence in 2013 to direct Rosewater , though, the show stumbled upon a way of approximating Stewart’s magic — they brought in a talented foreigner who could look upon America with a fresh eye. While Stewart was the enraged American, baffled by the behavior of his countrymen, Oliver was the bemused foreigner, whose outside-looking-in approach allowed him to show America how it was, and how it appeared to the rest of the world.
