PROBING THE FTC PROBE: Sen. Mike Lee and the Senate Antitrust Subcommittee are launching an investigation into the end of the FTC probe of Google in 2013 over the possibility that the termination of the FTC probe may have been politically motivated. By Brad Matthews | Watchdog Arena The Senate Antitrust Committee, headed by Sen. Mike Lee, R-UT, plans to investigate why the Federal Trade Commission ended its probe of Google in 2013 despite an internal recommendation that a lawsuit be brought against Google for anti-competitive practices. If the Justice Department cooperates, the committee would be able to subpoena documents to see if White House officials had any influence on the decision to end the Google probe. Lee is known for being anti-Google–he held hearings in 2011 on possible anti-competitive tactics used by Google–and is basing this new investigation on a recent WSJ report alleging that Google’s influence within the Obama administration helped it bypass proper regulatory oversight. By the time the probe was originally launched, Google had visited the White House 230 times, around once a week from the time Obama took office. Google Executive Chairman Eric Schmidt is also particularly close with the Obama team, having helped Obama get re-elected in 2012. He currently serves on the President’s Council of Advisers on Science and Technology. The committee will start off by grilling FTC officials and Google executives. The New
