MEMPHIS, Tenn. — There’s Black Friday, Cyber Monday, and in recent years, Giving Tuesday, a national day of giving to kick off the holiday season. Some local organizations promote it through social media sites, in the hopes you’ll give big. This time of year, lots of groups want to help out the Mid-South Food Bank. But during the holidays, the food is going out as fast as it’s arriving. That’s why workers are asking to take a break from your shopping Tuesday to log on to their website and give. They say just a little bit of money can go a long way to help someone in need. “We provide food to more than 200 partner agencies, and for every dollar we receive, we will be able to provide three good nutritious meals,” Estella with the food bank said. Some 16,000 organizations are taking part in Giving Tuesday, and not only are they asking people to give, but also to put a post or video on their social media accounts telling people where they gave Tuesday. Groups are also asking you to use #GivingTuesday to help raise awareness about what they do. Richard Packard with Alpha Omega Veterans shops at the food bank once a week to help vets in need, and all for a global day of giving back. “Probably without the food bank, we couldn’t stay in operation,” he said. If you can’t give up your money, you can always give up your time. The Giving Tuesday website has all sort of tools to participate and promote it.
