Benham Brothers defend Indiana religious-freedom law

Source: www.wnd.com - Tuesday, March 31, 2015

.com/blogger_img_proxy/ David and Jason Benham The Benham brothers, known as businessmen extraordinaire, are on video defending the Religious Freedom Restoration Act in Indiana, the target of harsh criticism by homosexual activists this week. And they know of what they speak, being successful in business and having been discriminated against because of their Christian faith. Jason and David, who just weeks ago started a WND column, posted on Facebook a video about the dispute. The Indiana law, similar to the federal law signed by President Clinton in 1993 as well as laws in dozens of other states, suddenly grabbed the headlines when protesters vocally condemned it as discrimination against the LGBT community. The law, however, doesn’t mention “gays” and is designed only to ensure the First Amendment rights of people to not violate their religious beliefs in the workplace. It sets a high standard, requiring the state have a compelling interest and that the free exercise of faith be “substantially burdened.” The video explains: “So the RFRA is a shield, not a sword. It doesn’t get offensive and promote ‘hate’ as the hype said. But it’s a shield to protect companies, like, for instance, a Jewish owned jewelry. It keeps the state from forcing him to create rings with the Nazi symbol on it. Or a Muslim-owned apparel company. It prevents the state from forcing him to maybe make T-shirts with the cross over the crescent. “Or even a gay-owned apparel company fr

Travel chaos in Argentina as transit unions strike

Source: http://ift.tt/eKERsB - Tuesday, March 31, 2015

.com/blogger_img_proxy/ Buenos Aires (AFP) - Argentina's largest cities ground to a halt Tuesday as transport unions went on strike, demanding tax cuts for low-income workers and putting the government on the defensive seven months out from general elections. An eerie quiet reigned over Buenos Aires as buses, trains and subways began a 24-hour shutdown at midnight, emptying the streets in this city of three million people and forcing many businesses to remain closed. The Buenos Aires metro area tops 13 million. The strike caused chaos at airports, with flights cancelled, rerouted or delayed. Several major regional airlines cancelled all flights to and from Argentina for the day, including LAN of Chile and TAM in Brazil. Public transport was also paralyzed in the second and third cities, Cordoba and Rosario. The strike, called by unions opposed to President Cristina Kirchner, is the fourth major stoppage of her administration, which wraps up this year after October 25 elections. Kirchner, who succeeded her late husband Nestor in 2007, is struggling to deal with an economic slowdown, high inflation and a messy debt default as she enters the home stretch of her second and final term. "Really, these (union supporters) who are having a stoppage, they sadden me. They ought to give some of the salary they earn to help out other people -- like their coworkers, like retirees, and people who don't have water to drink," Kirchner said before thousands of supporters

Limbaugh on Indiana Backlash: Where Does It End? ‘What Happens If You Love Your Dog?’

Source: www.mediaite.com - Tuesday, March 31, 2015

.com/blogger_img_proxy/ Rush Limbaugh today expressed his annoyance with the argument about gay people being discriminated against just for “who they love.” Limbaugh said it’s not about love, it’s about gay marriage and people with “prohibitions against it” or who don’t engage in “activity which lends credence or support to gay marriage.” And then Limbaugh asked, “where does that stop? If you’re gonna start throwing the phrase around ‘who you love,’ what happens if you love your dog?” He recalled the case of a woman who married a dolphin in England nine years ago and said gay marriage opponents are just being scolded about being “against love.” And, so, Limbaugh wondered, “But ‘who they’ love, what does that mean? Where does that stop?” And he brought up the dolphin again. Fox’s Perino, Gutfeld Pan ‘Unnecessary Culture War’ over Indiana: ‘Hurts the Right’

Source: www.mediaite.com - Tuesday, March 31, 2015

.com/blogger_img_proxy/ On Fox’s The Five today, both Dana Perino and Greg Gutfeld panned what Perino deemed an “unnecessary culture war” over Indiana’s religious freedom law. Perino argued that the tide is turning on gay marriage not just across the country, but within the GOP, and this fight only helps to “nullify” the progress that’s being made in the party to get Republicans to be more open and accepting of gay rights. Gutfeld, meanwhile, said Republicans should be spending more time finding things to unite the country and “focus on the stuff that’s beyond our borders.” Otherwise, he said, it’s this cultural battle that liberals are eager to fight because it distracts from a host of more important issues. He noted how the gay rights movement progressed because of the “respect that they had for other people” and concluded of this Indiana fight, “It helps the left, it hurts the right.” Watch the video below, via Fox News: OO.ready(function() { OO.Player.create('ooyalaplayer-J5c2FhdDqPGUnHgfW0i8Ytgh4YyzKf9K', 'J5c2FhdDqPGUnHgfW0i8Ytgh4YyzKf9K'); }); Please enable Javascript to watch. Trevor Noah Responds to Backlash Over Past Tweets

Source: time.com - Tuesday, March 31, 2015

South African comedian Trevor Noah responded Tuesday to backlash against his jokes in old tweets that surfaced after Monday’s announcement that he was named The Daily Show’s new host. The 31-year-old successor to Jon Stewart fittingly took to Twitter to address his critics, claiming that his Twitter history is “not a true reflection” of his character. To reduce my views to a handful of jokes that didn’t land is not a true reflection of my character, nor my evolution as a comedian. — Trevor Noah (@Trevornoah) March 31, 2015 Noah had been accused of anti-Semitism and sexism after his followers began to retweet and comment on his old posts. Some had even called for him to be fired, while others defended him against accusations of racism, citing his mixed race background. MORE: Trevor Noah Faces Backlash Over Tweets Comedy Central issued a statement earlier Tuesday that labeled the criticism “unfair.” “Like many comedians,” the network said, “Trevor Noah pushes boundaries; he is provocative and spares no one, himself included.” Noah’s response came after an earlier now-deleted tweet, which said, “Twitter does not have enough characters to respond to all the characters on Twitter.” Read next: With Trevor Noah, The Daily Show Goes for Change and Continuity

If you go to Google maps right now, you’ll notice a Pac-Man icon on the bottom-left side of your screen, like this: Clicking the icon, the location your map is set on is converted into a Pac-Man maze, and from there you can use the arrow keys to guide Pac-Man to cherry-gobbling prominence. Here’s how my map looked after Pac-Man’n it up from my location in Burbank, California: Okay, so not the most ideal place to start a Pac-Man campaign. It really didn’t take much for the ghosts to corner me in this area of Google Maps. Connecticut Governor: Mike Pence Was 'Incredibly Stupid' To Sign Indiana Religious Freedom Bill

Source: http://ift.tt/hFWySe - Tuesday, March 31, 2015

.com/blogger_img_proxy/ Connecticut Gov. Dan Malloy (D) , whose state was the first to boycott Indiana over a law many say allows businesses to discriminate against the LGBT community, didn't mince any words Tuesday when asked to react to Indiana Gov. Mike Pence's (R) defense of the law. "The governor's not a stupid man, but he's done stupid things," Malloy said Tuesday on MSNBC's "Morning Joe." "Signing this law and quite frankly promoting this law, knowing exactly what it was going to do, was an incredibly stupid thing for him to do." Indiana's Religious Freedom Restoration Act , which Pence signed into law on Thursday, allows businesses in the state to cite religious beliefs as a legal defense. Critics of the law fear it will allow businesses to legally refuse service to lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender individuals. Things got heated between Malloy and MSNBC host Joe Scarborough when the latter pointed to an article in The Washington Post that said several other states have passed laws similar to Indiana's with much less public uproar and fewer boycotts . Malloy argued that Indiana's law is distinguished by Pence aligning himself with the anti-LGBT-rights community. "If you get the picture of who was around [Pence] when he signed this bill , there were three homophobic men standing alongside the governor," Malloy said to Scarborough. "One of them had equated being gay with bestiality. That's who he invited to the signing ceremony. He knew exact

Head of the Anti-Defamation League Gives Trevor Noah the Benefit of the Doubt

Source: www.mediaite.com - Tuesday, March 31, 2015

New Daily Show host Trevor Noah is getting lots of heat today over some politically incorrect tweets of his from a few years ago, some about fat women, others about Jews. For example: Almost bumped a Jewish kid crossing the road. He didn't look b4 crossing but I still would hav felt so bad in my german car! — Trevor Noah (@Trevornoah) September 18, 2009 Messi gets the ball and the real players try foul him, but Messi doesn't go down easy, just like jewish chicks. #ElClasico — Trevor Noah (@Trevornoah) January 25, 2012 Behind every successful Rap Billionaire is a double as rich Jewish man. #BeatsByDreidel — Trevor Noah (@Trevornoah) May 12, 2014 Some people have characterized those tweets as Jew-hating or anti-Semitic, but the national director of the Anti-Defamation League, Abe Foxman , is not quite there yet. Writing for Time Magazine today , Foxman says he’s willing to give Noah the benefit of the doubt and doesn’t think it’s fair to judge him just based on a few tweets: The tweets that have been singled out — tasteless and offensive remarks about Jews, women, fat people, and others — seem mostly isolated and dated. Certainly, attacking Jews and minorities has not come to define this young stand-up comedian’s career, and, like many of other comedians, Mr. Noah seems more like an “equal opportunity offender” than a cheap-trick jokester or a raging bigot. Foxman does call the tweets “inexcusable” and say they play into anti-Semit

‘Unimaginable’: Man killed when headstone falls at mother-in-law’s gravesite

Stephen Woytack was decorating his mother-in-law’s grave for Easter on Monday when the stone toppled, reported ABC affiliate WNEP . Woytack’s wife, Lucy, was with him when it fell. “They tie a cross to it every year, the both of them. And after they’re done tying the cross, they stand there, say prayers and they leave,” Ed Kubilus, the cemetery caretaker, told the station . “Usually, I come down and talk to them right away; [but] I went around the other end to start picking up the Christmas ornaments, and she came running up, ‘Help me, the stone fell on Stephen.’” Throop PD confirms a 74yo man was killed when a headstone fell on him at St Joseph Cemetery @WNEP http://ift.tt/1IjSap7 — Stacy Lange (@stacylange) March 30, 2015 The incident happened in Throop, which is not far from Scranton. Labor Leader: 'We Will Not Stop' Fighting For Immigration Reform

Source: http://ift.tt/hFWySe - Tuesday, March 31, 2015

.com/blogger_img_proxy/ WASHINGTON -- Help from the government for undocumented immigrants isn't coming as quickly as they wanted, but union leaders and immigration activists are not giving up on President Barack Obama's currently stalled executive action programs. The AFL-CIO labor federation gathered about 200 people, mostly union members, in Washington on Tuesday for a three-day training on immigration advocacy. Part of that training will be focused on teaching people how to apply for Obama's immigration executive action programs, which are currently on hold by a court order. "If anyone asks you why we’re holding this training now, while we wait for a judge to either clear the way or put up another hurdle, tell them this progress can be stalled but it cannot be stopped," AFL-CIO President Richard Trumka said. "We’ve come this far. We’re going forward. We will not stop." The initial triumph over Obama's November announcement that he would grant reprieve to more undocumented immigrants has turned into disappointment and confusion over the past six weeks, after a federal judge issued a preliminary injunction to prevent the policies from moving forward. Now, the more than 4 million undocumented immigrants who might be eligible for Obama's reprieve programs are in a holding pattern, and advocates are doing their best to keep them from losing hope. The Obama administration and its supporters say they are confident they will eventually win out in the courts

This is the new browser Microsoft wants you to use instead of Internet Explorer (MSFT)

Source: http://ift.tt/eKERsB - Tuesday, March 31, 2015

.com/blogger_img_proxy/ If you're scratching your head and wondering why Microsoft is making a new web browser from scratch, just take a look at this chart: Internet Explorer, which not long ago totally dominated the browser market, has been eclipsed in recent years by Google Chrome, according to stats compiled by Dadaviz . Older versions of Explorer had their problems, and even though the newest version is pretty good, people rarely use it. So it's back to the drawing board for Microsoft. When Microsoft releases Windows 10 later this year, it'll come with a new browser, which is codenamed Project Spartan for now. (Explorer will still stick around, but it seems likely that Microsoft will phase it out over time.) On Monday, Microsoft released an early version of Spartan to public testers of Windows 10. Spartan isn't even close to finished, but it does give us a good idea where Microsoft is headed. There's nothing revolutionary about Spartan, but I do like the clean design and integration with Cortana, Microsoft's digital assistant that comes with Windows phones and Windows 10. Let's take a quick tour. It has a clean layout. The menus are simple. Sometimes, reading an article on the web can be distracting. But Spartan has a solution. If you click the book icon while reading a story in Spartan, you go into a reading mode. It strips out a lot of the extra elements, making it easier to read. This is a common feature on modern browsers. You can also draw, hig

Personal Details Of World Leaders Accidentally Leaked By Australian Officer – Second Incident Of ‘Human Error’ Sparks Controversy

.com/blogger_img_proxy/ An Australian officer accidentally leaked highly sensitive personal details of 31 world leaders. Though the situation was contained, the country is red-faced at second such incident. Australia, the country that orgainzed the G20 summit last year, was left red-faced, when in a major diplomatic embarrassment, one of its immigration officials leaked personal details of 31 world leaders. The United States president, Barack Obama, the Russian president, Vladimir Putin, the German chancellor, Angela Merkel, the Chinese president, Xi Jinping, the Indian prime minister, Narendra Modi, the Japanese prime minister, Shinzo Abe, the Indonesian president, Joko Widodo, and the British prime minister, David Cameron, were among those who attended the Brisbane summit in November and whose details were exposed, albeit with no ill-intention . What’s even more appalling is the fact that the gaffe, which was fortunately tackled with a few minutes, was never revealed by Australia. Australian Immigration Department attempted to bury the security breach. Only when the Australia’s deputy opposition leader Tanya Plibersek, urged the country’s Prime Minister Tony Abbott to explain why the world leaders weren’t notified about the incident, did the world come to know. But by today, Comedy Central had to release a statement in his defense . Last night, bloggers combed through the relatively unknown comedian’s long Twitter timeline, and what they found was not good. There were a trove of (mostly three- to six-year-old) facile jokes about women and Jews. These one-liners, particularly the older ones, reeked of stale prejudice and thoughtlessness, even if, to my eyes, they were mostly dull clichés and possibly meant to be tongue-in-cheek. (Sometimes tone is hard to discern on the Internet!) "Oh yeah the weekend. People are gonna get drunk & think that I'm sexy!" – fat chicks everywhere. — Trevor Noah (@Trevornoah) October 14, 2011 Almost bumped a Jewish kid crossing the road. He didn't look b4 crossing but I still would hav felt so bad in my german car! — Trevor Noah (@Trevornoah) September 18, 2009 I'm watching Olympic women's hockey. It's like lesbian porn. Without the porn. #InLove — Trevor Noah (@Trevornoah) July 31, 2012 In another time, of course, these lame LOLs would be lost to posterity, exorcised in grubby standup routines than no one recorded, save with a giant shrug: “Comedian makes dumb, offensive jokes: breaking news at five!” But we’re living at an interesting mom

Why American companies are borrowing more in euros

Source: ftalphaville.ft.com - Tuesday, March 31, 2015

While nominal borrowing costs are now much lower in Europe than in the US, that by itself isn’t a good reason for firms that earn money in dollars to start taking out debt in euros. Modest moves in exchange rates can wipe out any perceived benefits from lower interest rates — just imagine what would happen if the euro returned to its level last summer of around $1.4 — and the cost of hedging this currency risk usually means that borrowers are better off staying in local currency. American corporate treasurers know all this, yet are also responsible for more than a fifth of all the euro-denominated investment grade corporate bonds issued in 2015. What gives? Apple Opens Watch App Submissions for All Developers

Source: www.macstories.net - Tuesday, March 31, 2015

After approving Watch apps from select developers last week, Apple has begun accepting submissions for Watch apps from all registered iOS developers. From the company's developer blog : It’s time. Apple Watch will be in the hands of customers on April 24. Get your WatchKit apps ready and submit them for review now. Apple has also created a new webpage titled 'Preparing Your App Submission for Apple Watch' with details on what developers should do before submitting an Apple Watch app to the App Store. There are some interesting tidbits on this page, such as limitations for app previews, which must show only iPhone apps: Your app preview may only use footage of your iPhone app, and footage must stay within the app. Do not change your preview to show your WatchKit app. And a note that suggests apps from third-party developers will be approved before April 24 and therefore used by people with a pre-release Watch unit: Once your WatchKit app is approved and released by Apple, your existing iPhone users will receive the app update and customers will see your WatchKit extension icon and description on the App Store. A small group of people who currently have an Apple Watch will be able to use your WatchKit app before April 24, so make sure your back end systems are ready. As I wrote last week, releasing Watch apps before the April 24 launch is a smart move from Apple: For the first time in several years, a new Apple product will be revi

What Easter Says About Trusting Women

Source: http://ift.tt/hFWySe - Tuesday, March 31, 2015

.com/blogger_img_proxy/ Why do men fail to trust women? In his last post responding to Damon Young's HuffPo piece , Alastair suggested a number of reasons men fail to trust women -- including that men are taught not to trust their own (nor women's) feelings, differences in perception and experience, a gendered confidence gap, and a number of salient issues that pertain to allegations of abuse and why the abused one (often, a woman) has a hard time being believed. Here is one additional, glaring thing that I wanted to add: haven't men always failed to trust women, because somehow there is an innate belief that women are less trustworthy? History is replete with examples of women's testimonies in court not being believed, of women being considered hysterical witnesses, of women not being considered as able to participate in discussion, weigh opinions, to vote. I am grateful to be a woman in the 21st century rather than in the 18th century, when I would not have been able to participate in both law school and seminary -- both realms considered beyond the reach of women (a hat tip here to Hannah More , as one of the women who worked hard to change the world despite being an 18th century woman!) However, even as a woman in the 21st century, I am affected by this subterranean suspicion that women are somehow less trustworthy than men. And sadly, in the church, the Bible is often touted to support that view. 1 Peter 3 refers to wives as "weaker vessels" than t

Indiana Governor Urges Clarification of Controversial Religious Freedom Law

Source: time.com - Tuesday, March 31, 2015

Indiana Gov. Mike Pence urged state lawmakers Tuesday to amend a controversial new religious freedom law to clarify that it does not allow businesses to discriminate, bowing to days of criticism that the measure was an invitation to refuse services to gay customers. “After much reflections and consultation with the leadership of the General Assembly, I’ve come to the conclusion it would be helpful to move legislation this week that makes it clear this law does not give businesses the right to deny services to anyone,” Pence said in a news conference. The clarification to the state’s Religious Freedom Restoration Act would explicitly state that the law does not give businesses the right to discriminate. Pence is pushing to enact the change this week. The law, which Pence signed last week, has ignited a national firestorm from opponents who decry it as anti-gay. Activists pointed to statements made by advocates of the law, who said that florists, for example, could deny service to weddings of gay couples. Business leaders, from Indiana health corporations to Apple CEO Tim Cook , also spoke out against the law, and a movement to boycott Indiana gained traction Monday. Source: http://ift.tt/hFWySe - Tuesday, March 31, 2015

.com/blogger_img_proxy/Jay Z officially announced Monday his foray into the digital streaming music market with his star-studded press conference launch for Tidal . Unlike its established rivals Spotify and Pandora, the mogul has enlisted a slew of A-list musicians to partner with him on the premium monthly subscription service, which is offered at two price points: $20 for "lossless high fidelity sound quality" and $10 for standard sound quality. Prior to rolling out Tidal at Monday's event in New York City, Hov sat with Billboard magazine for an in-depth interview about his latest business venture. Among the many topics discussed, the 45-year-old Brooklyn native described his initial pitch to attract artists --including Madonna and Jack White -- to partake in what he envisions to be a groundbreaking business model for the music industry. “I think there was a bit of nervousness because of how things work: This is something new and unknown. But at the core everyone was super-excited at the idea,” he said. “Like ‘Yes, let’s do this. Let’s not only create a place that has great music -- let’s protect the future generation of artists,’” he continued. “I think this thing changes the world for them. It makes everything different, you know? Between those things it was like, ‘We have to do this, we are almost charged in this position to do it.’” Jay’s selling points may have resulted in a slight blow to Spotify when Taylor Swift removed her entire catalog of

Brother of Mass Shooting Victim Campaigns Against Gun Control

Source: pjmedia.com - Tuesday, March 31, 2015

.com/blogger_img_proxy/ Few people on either side of the border realize that school shootings were invented in Canada , not the U.S. — a good 20 years before Columbine, as a matter of fact. Canada’s worst — the 1989 killing of 14 female engineering students by evil white man Marc Lepine (Muslim) Gamil Gharbi — was the impetus behind the nation’s utterly pointless long gun registry. Every year, Canadian liberals and progressives “celebrate” the December 6 anniversary (I call it “Never Hear the End of It” Day ), because at least until recently, that registry (like “free” “health” “care”) was one of the Canadian things they were most proud of. Then Harper’s Conservatives, as promised, abolished the registry. A recent Supreme Court decision upheld the government’s right to destroy all its data. (Another moot point: Thanks to the ingenious Great Canadian Gun Registry Shuffle , those records were rendered useless anyhow.) Here and in the U.S., we gun-rights types are used to being scolded with the phrase, “You’d change your mind if one of your relatives got shot.” Well, meet Claude Colgan. His sister was killed during the “Montreal Massacre,” and he is an outspoken opponent of gun control laws that merely punish the law abiding while doing nothing to reduce crime. Here he is talking to Brian Lilley of TheRebel.media following the Supreme Court decision: Click here to view the embedded video.

Why Comedy Central’s Justin Bieber Roast Was Such a Disappointment

Source: flavorwire.com - Tuesday, March 31, 2015

“They say you only roast the ones you love,” Hannibal Buress began during his set at The Roast of Justin Bieber , “But I don’t like you at all, man. I’m just here because it’s a real good opportunity for me.” Joking or not, Buress’ comment is the best way to describe the overall feel of Justin Bieber’s roast. The stage was packed with comedians and celebrities — Kevin Hart (as roastmaster), Natasha Leggero, Pete Davidson, Jeffrey Ross, Snoop Dogg, Martha Stewart, and more — but the roast itself was tame and shrug-worthy, even with such an easy and arguably deserving target. The problem is that most of these roasters weren’t here to roast someone they love, or even a peer, but instead a 21-year-old pop singer who asked for this as a birthday gift. The best Comedy Central roasts — the most shocking, the wittiest, the ones that cause the audience to clamp their hands over their mouths in amused disbelief at what is being said — happen when the roasters have a rich and personal history with their victim. It’s not only funnier to see friends take cheap shots at each other, but it also means that these insults have more depth, nuance, and knowledge behind them. However crass they may sound, these jokes actually have meaning. It’s why the best punchlines at last night’s Bieber roast weren’t the ones directed at the kids himself but the ones roasters directed at other roasters: their friends and peers. It was friendly fire, and some of t

Stakes are High for Iran Nuclear Negotiations

Source: http://ift.tt/hFWySe - Monday, March 30, 2015

This week, the U.S. has a chance to lead an international coalition into an agreement that would guard against any attempt by Iran to obtain a nuclear weapon. However, the decades since the Iranian Revolution in 1979 are littered with missed opportunities to resolve differences between the U.S. and Iran, including on the nuclear issue. With political capital expended to keep the negotiations afloat, particularly in Washington, and the list of issues to be resolved shrinking, these negotiations have steadily risen in importance. As a result, failure or the rash rejection of a breakthrough by Congress or Iranian hardliners could result in irreparable damage to the diplomatic track, with profound consequences for an already chaotic region. We may never see a pair of U.S. and Iranian Presidents more willing to expend the political capital necessary to reach a nuclear deal. President Obama famously distinguished himself on the campaign trail in 2008 by vowing to sit down with any world leader without preconditions, including Iran, and has turned an Iran nuclear deal into what could be the chief foreign policy goal of his second term. Secretary of State John Kerry and other top U.S. diplomats have also spent countless hours doggedly pursuing a deal that balances between the political imperatives of Washington and Tehran. In Iran, President Rouhani campaigned on a platform of moderation and outreach to the West. Rouhani was the lead nuc

Gov. Mike Pence's 'religious freedom' argument destroyed by ... Fox News?

Source: www.dailykos.com - Monday, March 30, 2015

.com/blogger_img_proxy/ Who you gonna believe, Bret Baier or the text next to him? Indiana Gov. Mike Pence spent his weekend ungraciously leaping from the path of questions on the effects and intentions of the new Indiana law allowing public discrimination against gay Americans under the general banner of religious freedom , but one of the few things he has been quite sure of is that this new law is no different from any of the 1990s-era laws, dubbed Religious Freedom Restoration Acts , that other states passed back then. This has been the preferred defense of the new law, as the good folks of Fox News and the Republican Party (but I repeat myself) try to patiently explain this to everyone through a rigorous program of repeating it as many times as a conversation will allow. And here's Fox News personality Bret Baier, who accidentally destroys that argument in very specific, very concrete terms when he forgets to self-edit his remarks for the Fox News audience . ERIC SHAWN: You know, the law was intended to protect personal religious liberties against government overreach and intrusion. So what happened? BAIER: Well, Indiana's law is written a little differently. It is more broad. It is different than the federal law that it's close to, but different than, and also different than 19 other states and how the law is written. In specific terms, Indiana's law deals with a person who can claim religious persecution but that includes corporations, for profit e

The Boat, The White Hat, The Survivors: Key Moments In Boston Marathon Trial

Source: http://ift.tt/hFWySe - Monday, March 30, 2015

.com/blogger_img_proxy/ BOSTON (AP) — The defendant's startling admission on Day One that he did it. Tearful testimony from survivors who lost limbs. The boat. The white hat. As the prosecution rests, here's a look at some of the most compelling moments in the government's case against Boston Marathon bomber Dzhokhar Tsarnaev: OPENING STATEMENTS Tsarnaev's lawyer, Judy Clarke, startled a packed courtroom when she bluntly admitted during opening statements, "It was him." In a strategy designed to save him from the death penalty, Clarke told the jury that Tsarnaev had fallen under the malevolent influence of his now-dead older brother, Tamerlan, who she said had become radicalized and drew his brother into his plan to bomb the marathon. But prosecutor William Weinreb said the two brothers were equal partners in a plan to "tear people apart and create a bloody spectacle" to retaliate against the U.S. for its wars in Muslim lands. The Tsarnaevs — ethnic Chechens — moved to the U.S. from Russia more than a decade before the bombings. ___ THE SURVIVORS People who lost limbs in the explosions delivered heart-wrenching testimony about the moments after the explosions. Rebekah Gregory said she looked down at her leg: "My bones were literally laying next to me on the sidewalk and blood was everywhere. ... At that point, I thought that was the day I would die." Thumbs Down: Why Brands Should Care Less About the ‘Like’

Source: www.adweek.com - Monday, March 30, 2015

Social media is the ultimate popularity contest. Each day, new platforms emerge and attract early adopters, eager to become the best big thing for brands and consumers alike. From mobile apps to desktop sites, the game of numbers rages on across social mediums, placing a monumental amount of pressure on \"the like,\" a feature predominantly linked to Facebook. However, a recent survey suggests Facebook’s golden reign may be beginning to falter. According to a new report, brands are now posting more to Instagram than Facebook , suggesting that marketers are beginning to value quality of content over quantity of followers. Brands now post an average of 9.3 times a week to Instagram, up from 7.5 posts a year ago and topping Facebook’s decreased 8.8 rate. Meanwhile, an estimated 3 million U.S. teens abandoned Facebook between 2011 and 2014 and cite Instagram as “the most important” social network. So why has Instagram risen through the ranks and what can we expect from the network as it continues to grow? Transparency Such a shift ties to brands’ distrust of Facebook. When it boils down to it, brands know everything they post on Instagram will appear in followers’ feeds, whereas much of their Facebook content can remain unseen, even though many use paid media to engage with their followers. To increase Facebook visibility, brands now need to promote posts, which is detrimental to the organic reach of content. According to Facebook’s

If Obama Can Embrace the Saudi Monarch, Why Can't Putin Greet the North Korean Ruler?

Source: http://ift.tt/hFWySe - Monday, March 30, 2015

.com/blogger_img_proxy/ VLADIVOSTOK -- Kim Jong-un is scheduled to visit Moscow this May as one of the Kremlin's numerous guests of honor for the 70th anniversary of the victory over Nazi Germany. This will be his first visit abroad since he succeeded his father Kim Jong-il as the ruler of the Democratic People's Republic of Korea in December 2011. Kim Jong-un's trip to Moscow is one indication of the warming relationship between Russia and North Korea. The past year has seen a flurry of high-level exchanges between Moscow and Pyongyang. The two countries have concluded a number of agreements aimed at expanding their economic ties. To top it off, 2015 was designated official Year of Friendship between Russia and the DPRK. Russia-North Korea relations are now at their best since the collapse of the Soviet Union, when the two communist countries were considered allies. The current renaissance of Russian-North Korean friendship is due to several reasons. Ostracized and penalized by the U.S.-led West over its actions in Ukraine, Vladimir Putin is seeking closer ties with the regimes that have the reputation of being anti-American. North Korea is clearly among them. Like North Korea, Russia is now a target of Western reprisals, which makes Moscow feel more empathy with Pyongyang. Furthermore, Moscow may probably want to use its increased support for North Korea as additional leverage in its dealings with the Western capitals, Tokyo and Seoul. That said, I wo

Saudi Attack on Yemen Aims to Prevent Thaw Between Iran and the West

Source: http://ift.tt/hFWySe - Monday, March 30, 2015

.com/blogger_img_proxy/ Another bloody, destructive, and quite possibly long war has begun in the Middle East due to intervention by a foreign power in the internal affairs of another nation. A coalition of Arab states, led by Saudi Arabia, began bombing Yemen on March 26. The coalition's partners include the United Arab Emirates, Kuwait, Qatar, Bahrain, Morocco, Sudan, and Jordan . It is also supported by Turkey , Pakistan , and Egypt . The bombing, dubbed Operation Decisive Storm , has been receiving intelligence and logistical support from the United States Central Command that is responsible for all the Middle East and southwest Asia. The goal of the Saudi-led coalition is to defeat the Houthis, who belong to the Shiite branch of Islam and whose forces had overthrown the central government in Sanaa. The Houthis, who represent about 40 percent of Yemen's population, take their name from Hussein Badr Al-Deen Houthi , a Shiite religious leader who had visited Iran in the 1990s, and led the movement until he was killed in 2004. Saudi Arabia's excuse for the attacks was articulated by Adel al-Jubeir, its ambassador to the United States, who said , "Having Yemen fail cannot be option for us or for our coalition partners." Apparently, the Saudis believed that Yemen was failing because Ali Abdullah Saleh , Yemen's former president who was supported by Saudi Arabia but was deposed as a result of months of demonstrations in 2012, had sided with the Houthi Shi

Filmmakers Demand Cash From Popcorn Time Pirates

Source: torrentfreak.com - Monday, March 30, 2015

.com/blogger_img_proxy/ After suing hundreds of alleged downloaders in the United States, the makers of Dallas Buyers Club expanded their legal campaign to Europe late last year. The first cases were brought in Denmark, with anti-piracy lawfirm Maqs demanding fines of roughly 250 euros per infringement. After collecting several successful payments the scheme is now getting traction locally, especially following reports that Popcorn Time has become more popular than Netflix. “You could say that the ‘Dallas Buyers Club’ letters have been a success in the number of inquiries that have come in,” Maqs’ lawyer Jeppe Brogaard Clausen told DR , noting that new letters are still being sent out for Dallas Buyers Club. One of the filmmakers interested in the “speculative invoicing” scheme is Danish producer Ronnie Fridthjof. Together with other industry players he’s determined to go after Popcorn Time users. “I had hoped that politicians and the police would take care of such matters, but unfortunately that hasn’t happened. When my business is threatened, I am more or less forced to do something,” Fridthjof tells TV2 . While Popcorn Time is specifically mentioned as a target, the action will affect regular BitTorrent users as well. After all, Popcorn Time streams films by connecting to regular torrent swarms. The new fines are expected to be sent out this summer. The first ones will be around 1,000 to 2,000 Danish krone ($150 to $300), and will increase if recipie

Nationals Sign Reed Johnson To Minor League Deal

Source: http://ift.tt/OjZxTm - Monday, March 30, 2015

Though outfielder Reed Johnson was released by the Marlins earlier this morning, his brush with unemployment will apparently be fleeting, as the Nationals announced that they’ve signed him to a Minor League contract. Johnson, 38, will report to big league camp and be in the mix for a bench spot. The Nationals could use some additional outfield depth with Denard Span likely out through mid-May and Jayson Werth unlikely to be ready for Opening Day. As I noted this morning in discussing Johnson’s release, while his overall work with the bat is light, he’s still a solid option against left-handed pitching. Johnson batted .303/.319/.409 in 69 PA against lefties last year and is a lifetime .310/.363/.454 hitter when facing opposite-handed pitching. He has experience in center field but is likely best suited for left field at this stage of his career. It remains unclear exactly how the Nationals’ outfield situation will play out, but prospect Michael Taylor figures to slide into Span’s spot and receive the bulk of the playing time in center field.
