Va. Senate Votes to Ban Adoption of Common Core Standards

RICHMOND, Va. — The state Senate has voted to prohibit adoption of the national Common Core curriculum standards in Virginia public schools without prior approval from the General Assembly. Sen. Richard Black’s measure passed the Republican-controlled chamber Friday on a largely party-line 21-17 vote. It now goes to the House of Delegates. Black, a Loudoun County Republican, said there is widespread opposition to the national standards, ranging from conservatives and libertarians to teachers unions. Democratic Gov. Terry McAuliffe’s administration opposed Black’s bill, calling it unnecessary because the state has no plans to adopt the Common Core standards. The standards have been adopted by 43 states.
