In the Game of Thrones universe, Valyrian steel swords are like Apple watches. Rare, costly, and forged into existence with spells and dragonfire—or so the legends go—everyone wants one. Ever since the fall of Valyria, however, the knowledge of how to craft the magical steel has been lost. Now, in a new video, the American Chemical Society investigates whether it’s possible to recreate the powerful swords —valued for their strength, lightness, and permanently sharp edge—using chemistry. Their conclusion: Valyrian steel may not be actual steel at all. Instead, they contend the enchanted metal sounds more similar to modern-day supermaterials known as metal matrix composites. Good luck getting that to roll off the tongue.
