In response to Sen. Rand Paul ‘s (R-KY) entrance into the 2016 GOP presidential race , the only other declared candidate said he is “glad to welcome” Paul into the fray. That candidate is, of course, Paul’s fellow freshman senator Ted Cruz (R-TX), who issued a statement praising Paul immediately following his announcement speech . “Rand is a good friend, and we have worked side by side on many issues,” Cruz said. “I respect his talent, his passion, and the work he has done for Kentuckians and Americans in the U.S. Senate.” It is interesting to note, though, that Paul’s immediate response to Cruz’s entrance into the presidential race was not as cordial. Speaking to Megyn Kelly on Fox News on the day of Cruz’s announcement , Paul acknowledged that the two have similar voting records and come from the same wing of the Republican Party, but said Cruz’s strategy of “throwing red meat” won’t produce a GOP win in the 2016 general election. Cruz did, though, mention the importance of nominating a candidate who can beat presumptive Democratic nominee Hillary Clinton : “[Paul's] entry into the race will no doubt raise the bar of competition, help make us all stronger, and ultimately ensure that the GOP nominee is equipped to beat Hillary Clinton and to take back the White House for Republicans in 2016.” Read the full statement here .
