NEW YORK (KTVI) – According to USA Today , the NFL has officially hired their first full-time female referee for the 2015 season. While Sarah Thomas may be the first full-time hire by the league, she has been around the reffing game before both in the NFL and college ranks. According to the Baltimore Sun , she got her start in 2007 and in 2009, started reffing major college teams. In 2012, she was hired as a replacement ref during the officiating strike with one of her games being a preseason game between the St. Louis Rams and the Detroit Lions. She has also reffed practices and scrimmages during mini-camp practices as a part of the NFL’s officiating development program. This year will be her first time reffing regular season games.
