Source: pjmedia.com - Wednesday, December 31, 2014

YEAH, THAT’S NOT EXACTLY BY ACCIDENT: Roll Call: Confusion Surrounds Conflict of Interest Cases in Congress. Congressional investigators closed the 113th Congress with two reports touching on one of the murkiest subjects in the ethics manual: financial conflicts of interest. Investing in companies tied to their home districts can help members understand the impact federal government decisions have on the private sector, but those ventures sometimes create a risk to their reputation. “A congressman should zealously represent his constituents — he just can’t be one of them,” said Craig Engle, head of the political law group at Arent Fox LLP. He served as general counsel to the National Republican Senatorial Committee for five years, counseling candidates laws related to elections and holding office, before moving to private practice. “If you really want to make money, be a businessman,” he said in an interview. “If you want to make a difference, be a congressman. But you can’t be both at the same time.” House rules prohibit members from using their seats to build their personal fortunes. The Code of Ethics bars people in government service from dishing out special favors and privileges, or accepting special benefits that might influence their job performance. Following tricky decisions related to corruption allegations against Democratic Reps. Shelley Berkley of Nevada and Maxine Waters of California, the House Ethics Committee ack

The five major things we screwed up in inequality in 2014

Here’s where our lawmakers and CEOs did a shoddy job of helping the economy The year is drawing to a close, and it’s time to take a look back at what has happened. Fox Flips over Claim Obama Is Trying to Ban Sprinkles

Source: www.mediaite.com - Wednesday, December 31, 2014

.com/blogger_img_proxy/ Fox & Friends rang the Nanny State alarm yesterday morning when fill-in host Clayton Morris held up a tray of donuts and told his viewers to eat them before the Obama administration made them illegal. The hubbub is over FDA regulations expected in 2015 to further limit the amount of partially hydrogenated oils, the primary source of trans fat, in products ranging from pizza to coffee creamer. Alternet’s Cliff Weathers tracked down the “Obama banning sprinkles” line to a Breitbart article which warned that “this Christmas, don’t pass up those holiday cookies or cupcakes with the festive sprinkles. They may soon be a distant memory we have to explain to our grandchildren.” “Doesn’t the FDA have more important things to do than regulate sprinkles?” Morris asked, adding that it’s not like people eat these pastries every day or anything. Per Alternet, this is much ado about nothing: the major sprinkle manufacturers already sell sprinkles without trans fat (Palour boasts of its non-trans fat toppings ), while major sprinkle pastry like Dunkin Donuts and Krispy Kreme have managed to eradicate trans fat from their foods without turning into a chain of vegan cafes. Moreover, a ban on high levels of trans fat last decade forced many restaurants to alter how they cooked food; you can still get chicken fried steak. The new FDA regulations were initially proposed in 2013, when the agency said that eliminating trans fat would prevent 20,000 he

Guest post: China as a model renewable energy economy

Source: blogs.ft.com - Wednesday, December 31, 2014

.com/blogger_img_proxy/ By Li Hejun, China New Energy Chamber of Commerce and Hanergy Holding Group Almost 200 governments met in Peru this month to hammer out a first draft of a global deal to cut emissions, ahead of a new round of climate talks next year in Paris. If the world is to arrest climate change, global economies need to embrace renewable energy. Those looking for a model of how this might be done should consider a possibly surprising source: China. It has been little noticed by the outside world, but in China a technological revolution that will result in huge gains in efficiency and new applications for renewable energy has already begun. Report: Samsung to begin Lollipop rollout in US in January

Source: http://www.androidauthority.com - Wednesday, December 31, 2014

.com/blogger_img_proxy/ With OEM skins, Android updates are something of a mixed bag, especially among top-tier products: the question isn’t really one of if, but instead when . Motorola, for example, has shuttered its Motoblur skin entirely, and gets updates out the door quickly. Samsung on the other hand, still requires some down-time before it can begin the roll-out. This year has seen the Korean giant speed things up considerably, with a [limited] Lollipop roll-out in select parts of Europe for the Galaxy S5 flagship some weeks ago. However, American customers are still left standing. But, not for long? Thanks to Reddit user SamsungRep2015 , we now know that the USA distribution for Android 5.0 Lollipop will begin in January. As nothing has been officially verified by Samsung USA, this information is still “unofficial”, however Reddit mods have apparently verified the authenticity of said user’s employment at Samsung. S/he reports that the Galaxy S5 will be the first to receive the update, followed by the Galaxy Note 4 and Galaxy Note Edge , and then the Galaxy S4 and Galaxy Note 3 , with tablets (such as the pair of Galaxy Tab S flagships) apparently coming in the fourth wave. The following screen capture reported to be from Samsung internal e-mails was also posted: SamsungRep2015 (Reddit) Despite the above image, there is no information provided as to which carriers this update will be coming to and when, nor is there any indication as to what ver

Scalise Should Learn To Google, Ctd

An unknown economist named Dave Brat upset Eric Cantor & the GOP ended up with a guy who speaks to white nationals in leadership #winning — Political Line (@PoliticaILine) December 30, 2014 And Cantor, of course, was the only Jewish Republican left in Congress. The latest in the Scalise scandal : the guy who organized the white nationalist conference is defending the embattled whip: “The truth is that we used that room early on in the day to sponsor a town hall meeting between Steve Scalise and his constituents,” [Kenny] Knight said. “It was totally separate from the EURO conference […] Poor Steve Scalise is getting a bad rap,” Knight, a long-time aide to former KKK leader David Duke, told The Daily Beast. “I don’t think Steve Scalise would come anywhere near a white hate group.” It’s a bit of an odd statement, since Knight and his cohorts don’t consider their outfits to be hate groups, despite their stridently racist rhetoric. About that rhetoric : “My [EURO] speech was about the Iraq war,” Duke said, adding that thought at the time “that it was a war for Israel, the Richard Perles and the Paul Wolfowitzes of the world”—a reference to two Jewish advisers to President George W. Bush, who supported the Iraq war. Duke, a former Republican state legislator who has run unsuccessfully several times for higher office, said he did not hear Scalise’s address to the group. “He came and actually just spoke to his local constituents about o

Upcoming VAIO smartphone could help reshape Japanese market

Source: http://www.androidauthority.com - Wednesday, December 31, 2014

.com/blogger_img_proxy/ Once upon a time, Sony was King of the Hill, offering new and exciting products, concepts, and form factors to an endless array of electronics. Fast forward to April 2014 and the unthinkable sale of the VAIO brand to Japan Industrial Partners (JIP). Although Sony retains a 5% minority share in the new “VAIO Corporation”, just a quick stroll down the aisle of a major electronics store here in Tokyo will serve as a sad reminder of days gone by, as the Sony logo is absent both from branding and displays. Still, JIP has a difficult task of building (back) the VAIO brand: as of yet, the only two products it offers are essentially the same as those which Sony released, although that it’s about to change. Set to release in Japan next year, the VAIO smartphone line might be a bit of a surprise for what it’s not going to be, given the brand’s pedigree: top-of-the-line. While little is known about the specs of the new device (set to launch as early as January), The Nikkei has reported that it will have a 5-inch screen, and that, “price including service charges has yet to be set but will likely fall between that of major brands and the low-priced handsets already in the market.” Additionally there are plans to “feature an app that can manage email as well as phone and video calls all together.” The device will be sold by local MVNO (mobile virtual network operator), Japan Communications, which provides pre-paid service under the brand name

NY Times to NYPD, Day 2: ‘Do Your Jobs’

Source: www.mediaite.com - Wednesday, December 31, 2014

.com/blogger_img_proxy/ The New York Times issued its second editorial against the NYPD in two days, this time excoriating the department for its alleged work slowdown. The New York Post reported yesterday that police activity had plummeted since the union called for a work “slowdown” in response to Gotham Mayor Bill de Blasio’ s remarks following the Eric Garner decision and the ambush-style murder of two NYPD officers. (The protracted contract dispute has a good deal to do with it as well.) The department’s “list of grievances adds up to very little, unless you look at it through the magnifying lens of resentment fomented by union bosses and right-wing commentators,” the ed board wrote Wednesday . (On Tuesday they chided the department for its “snarling sense of victimhood”.) RELATED: Fox Contributor to NYPD: ‘Do Your Job’ The Times reminded the NYPD Wednesday morning that de Blasio was elected by a landslide to enact the sort of reforms, such as ending Stop and Frisk and quota-based policing, that he had since implemented, and that he had pumped millions of dollars into the department while overseeing a 4.4% drop in crime. “Do your jobs,” the paper advised. “The police are sworn public servants, and refusing to work violates their oath to serve and protect. Mr. Bratton should hold his commanders and supervisors responsible, and turn this insubordination around.” [h/t New York Times ] [Image via pisaphotography / Shutterstock.com ] —— >> Follow Evan M

An Optimist's Guide to 2015 Politics

Source: www.theatlantic.com - Wednesday, December 31, 2014

Could 2015 be the year things work in American politics? Probably not in Washington, although it's a fun fantasy to indulge. And while it's unlikely the next 12 months will see an outbreak of comity and decline in partisan polarization, there are some reasons to look for action in Washington and especially in state capitals and the court system. If nothing else, it's the last chance before the 2016 presidential campaign begins in earnest—crowding out all other factors, privileging grandstanding over gritty details, and drawing top contenders away from D.C. and out into Iowa, New Hampshire, and South Carolina. So what's going to happen? Making predictions about political outcomes is a fool's errand, but there are a few topics to watch. There are optimists out there who think that divided government could be productive. With control of both houses of Congress newly acquired, Republicans will want to prove that they can govern, that they're not just the "Party of No," as Democrats have charged. President Obama, meanwhile, will want to work with them to help secure his legacy as his term winds down—2015 is likely his last chance to get anything accomplished—to say nothing of what his Democratic allies see as a maddening impulse to bipartisanship and surrender, even when it isn't necessary. That's well and good and makes sense as far as it goes. But what, precisely, is there for them to compromise on? Or will Republicans just pass a l

Musician ignores legal threats from Sony and continues tweeting hacked emails

Source: venturebeat.com - Wednesday, December 31, 2014

.com/blogger_img_proxy/ Either musician Val Broeksmit is extremely courageous, or extremely foolish. Last week, Broeksmit gained global attention following news reports that Sony had threatened to sue him because he was tweeting pictures of emails released by hackers. Initially freaked out, Broeksmit remained calmed and instead decided to keep tweeting from his @BikiniRobotArmy account. Over the past week, Broeksmit has posted a steady barrage of pictures of leaked emails that contain a mix of interesting Hollywood insider gossip ( Sony executives hated the most recent Superman movie ; Cameron Crowe might want to direct the Steve Jobs biopic ) to emails that are just plain embarrassing . In an interview last week, Broeksmit said he wasn’t sure how seriously to take Sony’s threat. In an email this week, he said he hadn’t heard anything more from Sony over the holidays since he received a notification that Sony was considering legal action if he didn’t stop tweeting. So far, Broeksmit said the only fallout was that Twitter removed one tweet related to a James Bond script because it may have violated copy write laws. Meanwhile, since news of the Sony legal threat broke, Broeksmit has seen his followers in Twitter jump from 17,763 to 22,154. Another case, perhaps, of Sony tactics by bringing more attention to someone doing something they don’t want others to see. . @BikiniRobotArmy You are doing god’s work. — Jac (@_CocktailQueen) December 16, 2014

The WAM7500 and WAM6500 speakers, as they're called, look like alien eggs - or something from the video game Portal - and use "ring radiator" technology to project sound in 360 degrees. The WAM6500 is on a stand, while the WAM7500 is "movable," with a rechargeable battery. The speakers were developed in part at Samsung's audio lab in California, the company said. The Big 3-0 for LeBron James

Source: abcnews.go.com - Wednesday, December 31, 2014

LeBron James is 30. He was 17 when he was on the cover of Sports Illustrated. He was 19 when he won the Rookie of the Year. He was 20 when he scored 56 points in a game. He was 23 when he played in his first NBA Finals. He was 24 when he won his first MVP. He was 25 at The Decision. He was 27 when he won his first title. He was 29 when he wrote The Letter. As James' life has unfolded in public, millions have watched his accomplishments expand and his hairline recede. Because his life has been defined by stardom and basketball, it is perhaps only appropriate that his birthday falls in the middle of the season. This means many of James' birthdays have been work days. He's had some great parties and created some lasting memories, but they've often come around games. When James gets the schedule each year, he zeroes in on late December. Where will he be on Christmas, and where will he be on his birthday? ...

Taxes destroy

Source: www.humanevents.com - Wednesday, December 31, 2014

The U.S. Census Bureau announced last week that New York slipped to fourth place in population among the 50 states. Though babies still are born every day in my home state and immigrants still flock here, overall population growth lags because New Yorkers are abandoning the state. Don’t blame the weather. Blustery Montana and North Dakota are not having this problem. New Yorkers are escaping high taxes and dismal job growth. High-tax states Illinois and New Jersey, which has the second-highest tax burden in the country, are also losing residents. Families are uprooting and moving to places with lower taxes, more growth and fossil fuel-friendly policies. In the November elections, voters in Illinois expelled their high-tax incumbent governor, Democrat Pat Quinn, while voters in Massachusetts and Maryland rebuked tax-and-spend Democrats by putting their gubernatorial seats in Republican hands. Not so in New York, where incumbent Democrat Andrew Cuomo easily won a second term against his Republican challenger, Rob Astorino. Cuomo has made tweaks in the state’s tax policies by lowering the corporate income tax rate from 7.1 percent to 6.5 percent, exempting more assets from the death tax and temporarily capping annual increases in property taxes. None of these minor changes has moved the economic needle. According to the latest New York State Labor Department data, job growth in New York is half the national average. Astorino put forw

In Depth: Highs and lows for Apple in 2014

Source: www.techradar.com - Wednesday, December 31, 2014

.com/blogger_img_proxy/ The highs It's been an interesting year for the world's most interesting company: we've seen bigger phones, surprising shopping sprees and what could be the beginning of a high profile adventure in the world of high fashion. But it hasn't all been good: Apple also suffered from broken glass, unwanted U2 and a bad case of the bends. Let's discover the highs and lows for Apple in 2014. Highs 1. Apple Watch The worst-kept secret in tech was a secret no more in 2014: Apple unveiled the Apple Watch and its many incarnations this year, and the release of the accompanying SDK gave us a good idea of what we can expect from its software when the watch ships in the spring. If it's a hit it means Apple will become a hugely important fashion brand, and the signs are certainly pointing in that direction: Apple generated more column inches with a watch it isn't shipping yet than all other smartwatch manufacturers combined. 2. iPhone 6 and 6 Plus Bad news for anybody with little hands but great news for anyone who wanted bigger iPhones: Apple unveiled not one but two bigger devices in the form of the iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus . They're both big-screened beauties with typically great design, but that thinness also introduced bendyness. More of that in a moment. 3. Buying Beats Even by Beats' pricey standards, $3 billion is a lot for some headphones - but when Apple bought Beats it was really interested in the talent behind Beats Music, which is

Police to patrol for inebriated drivers on notoriously drunk holiday

"New Year's Day is the most dangerous day of the year for drunk driving on our nation's roadways," according to the website of MADD, the anti-drunken driving advocacy group. If you plan on drinking, designate a non-drinking driver ahead of time and leave your keys at home or put the number of a friend or taxi service in your phone. New Year's is one of the busiest times of the year for Greenwich Taxi, with its drivers usually serving several hundred customers, according to owner Anthony Boskello. Available in Apple's App Store and the Google Play store for Android devices, the app puts the taxi company in the digital marketplace with competitors like Uber and Lyft.

CDC To Hire Lab Safety Chief After Ebola, Bird Flu Mishaps

Source: http://www.huffingtonpost.com - Tuesday, December 30, 2014

.com/blogger_img_proxy/ CHICAGO, Dec 31 (Reuters) - The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention plans to hire a chief of laboratory safety, a new post that has taken on more urgency after a CDC scientist was possibly exposed to Ebola in a laboratory last week. Creating a new high-level safety position was a key recommendation of a months-long internal investigation into the mishandling of anthrax and bird flu in CDC labs this past summer, according to an internal CDC memo obtained by Reuters. Those incidents called into question safety practices at more than 1,000 laboratory and support facilities across the CDC's sprawling network of scientists. CDC spokeswoman Barbara Reynolds confirmed that a search for an agency-wide chief of laboratory science and safety was under way. The search, which has not been previously reported, is being led by Dr. Rima Khabbaz, director of CDC's Office of Infectious Diseases. "The person selected will be empowered to identify problems, establish plans to solve them, and hold programs throughout CDC accountable for follow-up," Reynolds said in an email. Private laboratories that work closely with the CDC welcomed the move. "This is going to bring a focus to lab science and safety that has been really needed for two decades," said Scott Becker, executive director of the Association of Public Health Laboratories, a national group representing state and municipal public health laboratories. Indonesia Finds Bodies and Debris in Search For Missing Jet

Source: www.newsweek.com - Tuesday, December 30, 2014

Indonesian rescuers saw bodies and luggage off the coast of Borneo island on Tuesday and officials said they were "95 percent sure" debris spotted in the sea was from a missing AirAsia plane with 162 people on board. Indonesia AirAsia's Flight QZ8501, an Airbus A320-200, lost contact with air traffic control early on Sunday during bad weather on a flight from the Indonesian city of Surabaya to Singapore. Pictures of floating bodies were broadcast on television and relatives of the missing gathered at the crisis center in Surabaya were shown weeping, their heads in their hands. Media quoted an air force official earlier as saying one suspected body, luggage and a life vest were among the debris in the Java Sea. "As we approached, the body seemed bloated," said First Lieutenant Tri Wibowo, who was on board a Herculesaircraft, was quoted by the Kompas.com website as saying. Search and Rescue Agency chief Soelistyo told reporters he was "95 percent sure" the debris was from the missing plane. Djoko Murjatmodjo, acting director general of air transportation at the transportation ministry, told reporters some of the debris spotted was red and white, AirAsia's colors. "It's probably from the aircraft," he said. About 30 ships and 21 aircraft from Indonesia, Australia, Malaysia, Singapore, South Korea and the United States were searching up to 10,000 square nautical miles on Tuesday. The plane, which did not issue a distress signal, disa

Gun Deaths Of Law Enforcement Officers Reportedly Jump 56 Percent

Source: http://www.huffingtonpost.com - Tuesday, December 30, 2014

.com/blogger_img_proxy/ WASHINGTON (AP) — The number of law enforcement officers killed by firearms in the U.S. jumped by 56 percent this year and included 15 ambush assaults, according to a report released Tuesday. The annual report by the nonprofit National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial Fund found that 50 officers were killed by guns this year, compared to 32 in 2013. In all, the report found that 126 federal, local, tribal and territorial officers were killed in the line of duty in 2014. That's a 24 percent jump from last year's 102 on-duty deaths. Shootings were the leading cause of officer deaths in 2014 followed by traffic-related fatalities, at 49. The sharp increase in gun-related deaths among officers followed a dramatic dip in 2013, when the figure fell to levels not seen since the 19th century. This year's uptick comes amid increased tension between police and the public following the high-profile deaths of unarmed black men by white police officers, including that of Eric Garner in New York and Mike Brown in Ferguson, Missouri. The states that saw the most officer deaths were California, at 14, Texas, at 11, and New York, at nine. Florida followed with six deaths, and Georgia had five, according to the report. The 15 ambush assaults on police officers this year compares to just five in 2013, but matched 2012 for the highest total since 1995, the report said. Vote for your favourite Sony Xperia of 2014

.com/blogger_img_proxy/ 2014 will shortly come to a close, so it’s that time of year where we ask our readers to vote on their favourite Sony Xperia device. During 2014, Sony launched 16 Sony Xperia devices and that number doesn’t include the dual SIM variants. Sony has committed to reducing the number of handsets in its portfolio going forward, so it will be very interesting to see how many phones are released in 2015. We expect a lower number of entry-level and mid-range models, with a focus on the premium segment. When looking at the list below, six models fall into this category. Normally, it is the flagship devices that come up trumps in these polls, but last year bucked that trend with the mid-range Xperia SP emerging as the clear favourite in 2013. We can’t see something similar happening in 2014, but we’ll hand it over to you to find out. Pick your favourite Sony Xperia device of 2014 in the poll and let us know your reasons in the comments below. How Will The Global Economy Do In 2015? Here's What You Should Know

Source: http://www.huffingtonpost.co.uk - Tuesday, December 30, 2014

.com/blogger_img_proxy/The world can be a scary place, George Osborne seems to like suggesting, with every other economy in choppy waters as Britain's economy enjoys increasingly smooth sailing. Speaking in October , the Chancellor said: "Britain is part of a global economy, but that doesn’t mean Britain is just going to be buffeted by the storms....The eurozone risks slipping back into crisis. Britain cannot be immune from that." As 2015 nears, HuffPostUK asked various City experts to assess where the risks will lie for the global economy. Will we see Britain rocked by the storms, or emerge to even sunnier waters? Europe in the doldrums The economic drama looks set to continue on our own doorstep as Mario Draghi and European leaders try to pull the Eurozone back from the brink. The European Central Bank boss infamously pledged to do "whatever it takes" to hold the Eurozone together last time a breakup loomed in 2012, and economists suggest that Italy and Greece's ailing economies will pile on the pressure. The most popular political party in Greece, Syriza, wants to renege on the terms of Greece’s €240bn loan from the EU and IMF. Italy has a shrinking economy, government debt of €2,300bn and all three main opposition parties are anti-euro. There are concerns that the Eurozone could slip into a Japanese scenario of deflation and little growth. Given the internal political tensions around the monetary policies being promoted by the European Central Bank

In Depth: Has Google been naughty or nice in 2014?

Source: www.techradar.com - Tuesday, December 30, 2014

.com/blogger_img_proxy/ Has Google been naughty or nice in 2014? It's hard to briefly summarise a year for Google, what with the tech giant having so many fingers in so many pies. It's impossible to find any pie in the world that hasn't got Eric Schmidt's fingerprints on its crust and some of his nose hairs in the filling. In short, Google's big, busy, and involved with everything from internet balloons in Australia to driverless cars and fibre Wi-Fi in the US, meaning 12 months for Google is basically 12 months of the entire tech world. So, we'll try to stick to the enormous headlines of actual importance rather than summarise everything it did, otherwise this list feature will resemble a telephone directory of the tech news of 2014. 18-month upgrade cycle The first Google shock of the year came in January, when it was revealed that it had done a deal to sell Motorola to Chinese firm Lenovo for lots of ($3bn) dollars. It was quite the surprise as Google only bought Motorola in the middle of 2011 for $12bn, making it, on the surface, quite a financial disaster. Google kept most of the tech patents in the divorce, though, which many observers think were the real - and only - reason it bought the phone maker in the first place. Google left it in good shape, mind, with the Moto G and its 2014 sequel giving Motorola its first smash mobiles in years. The company's Nexus mobile programme spawned plenty of rumours through 2014, with some expecting a complete c

10 Races to Watch in 2016: New Hampshire’s 1st District

Source: atr.rollcall.com - Tuesday, December 30, 2014

Guinta will return to Congress after a two-year hiatus. (Tom Williams/CQ Roll Call File Photo) Will 2016 host another rematch between Republican Frank Guinta and Democrat Carol Shea-Porter? Shea-Porter narrowly lost to Guinta this year, handing him the seat the two have traded back and forth for the three cycles. Despite this, the Democrat is not ruling out round four. Shea-Porter told NH1 last week, “everything is on the table,” for 2016. It’s unclear whether national Democrats want her to run again in 2016, or if they’d prefer a new face. She is not the strongest fundraiser, but she has proved she can win the seat on multiple occasions — especially with a presidential-cycle turnout boost. Even if Shea-Porter does not run, the race will be very competitive. Democrats have historically done very well in New Hampshire in presidential years — they swept every both congressional seats and the governor’s election in 2012 and 2008 — and there’s no shortage of candidates. If Shea-Porter passes, operatives suggested several other candidates including Executive Councilor Chris Pappas, a Manchester Democrat who already represents a part of the district. They name state Sen. Andrew Hosmer of Laconia as another possibility, along with state Sen. Donna Soucy of Nassau. Another possibility: state Sen. Martha Fuller Clark of Portsmouth, who was the Democratic nominee for this seat in 2000 and 2002. But the eventual Democratic nominee will have

Ebola scare: Health worker taken to London clinic after virus confirmed

Source: rt.com - Tuesday, December 30, 2014

.com/blogger_img_proxy/ The woman, originally from Glasgow, had traveled via Casablanca to London Heathrow. When authorities confirmed she had Ebola, it is understood she returned to London from Glasgow in an RAF military plane. While British officials say the risk of Ebola spreading is “very low,” passengers on board flights taken by the woman are being traced. The government has also affirmed it is doing “absolutely everything it needs to” to ensure public safety. “We are also reviewing our procedures and protocols for all the other NHS workers who are working at the moment in Sierra Leone,” said UK Health Secretary Jeremy Hunt. The woman had been working with the charity Save the Children in Sierra Leone, one of the countries most severely hit by the virus since the outbreak earlier this year. The new case follows the successful treatment of William Pooley, a British nurse who contracted Ebola while working in Sierra Leone. Pooley was cleared of the virus in September after receiving treatment at the Royal Free Hospital in London. While Ebola has affected few people in the West, it has claimed more than 7,000 lives across West Africa, in what is seen as one of the region’s biggest humanitarian disasters in history. In October, Hunt told MPs that the UK was likely to see several cases of people who have contracted Ebola, and introduced mandatory testing in British airports for individuals traveling to and from West Africa. “The risk of the general pub

Retailers Skimp on Post-Holiday Creative, Push Deals

Source: adage.com - Tuesday, December 30, 2014

.com/blogger_img_proxy/ Retailers skimped on new creative post-holiday this year, instead relying on mainly promotional ads. An exception was Old Navy, one of the few retailers to unveil fresh advertising after the holiday. It offered up a new spot featuring Julia Louis-Dreyfus to promote the retailer's after-holiday deals. In the commercial, Ms. Louis-Dreyfus runs out on her massive New Year's resolution board to take advantage of Old Navy's sale. Macy's is rerunning its 2012 "Week of Wonderful" spot featuring Clinton Kelly from TLC's "What Not to Wear," alongside deal-driven ads for post-holiday sales. Macy's first staked its claim on the week between Christmas and New Year's two years ago and it remains an important time for the company as it looks to capture shoppers using their holiday gift cards and making exchanges. Mr. Norcross Goes to Washington

Source: www.wnyc.org - Tuesday, December 30, 2014

On his first day in the U.S. House of Representatives, Donald Norcross introduced himself as a blue collar union man. “I grew up in the profession as an electrician and look where we are now. Member of the House. This is truly the American dream and I’m proud to be a part of it.” Norcross defeated former Eagles linebacker Gary Cobb to win the November election in New Jersey’s 1st congressional district. He replaced Rob Andrews, who resigned amid an ethics probe. He spent two decades as a private sector labor leader in South Jersey and then moved quickly up the ranks of the state legislature. In his very first Congressional vote, he broke from fellow Democrats to support the Keystone Pipeline for the jobs he believes it will bring. Then, a few weeks later, the freshman congressman had the honor of flying to New Jersey with President Obama on Air Force One. There was just one hitch. New Jersey’s largest news site confused him with his brother, George Norcross – which is perhaps understandable. (The mistake has since been cleared up , with no correction.) “George Norcross's influence in New Jersey is I think the thing that's important to talk about because it is so extensive but at the same time relatively hidden,” said Ross Baker, a professor of political science at Rutgers. He says the man is political boss, the likes of which have become rare in the United States. Norcross picks candidates for local and legislative races. He rais

There Are Many Unanswered Questions In The Italian Ferry Disaster

Source: http://www.businessinsider.com - Tuesday, December 30, 2014

.com/blogger_img_proxy/ The story of the Norman Atlantic, an Italian ferry that caught fire Sunday morning en route from Greece to Italy , leaves many questions open, as officials struggle to keep count of casualties and missing people. The ferry was cruising from Patras, Greece, to Ancona, Italy, when the flames started in the lower car deck. It is suspected that the first blazes originated from a lorry carrying olive oil that was scrapping against the ceiling of the car deck. The oil acted as a combustible and helped to spread the fire. Ten bodies have been found by the Italian navy and two more Albanian seamen were killed Tuesday morning while towing the vessel to shore. Two Albanian seamen killed on tugboat while towing fire-stricken Norman Atlantic ferry http://t.co/A4W6qvK9XD — BBC Breaking News (@BBCBreaking) December 30, 2014 This would raise the total death toll to 12. But there could be more as details are fuzzy. Neither Greek and nor Italian authorities know for certain how many people were on board when the fire broke out at around 4.50 am local time (3.50 am GMT) on Sunday morning. The official check-in list counted 422 passengers and 56 crew members (478 people in total), but the Italian navy on Monday rescued several undocumented migrants who where on board of the vessel. When the Italian coastal guard closed its operations on Monday evening, 427 people were rescued and 10 bodies were found: This means that up to 41 people are still missi
