CNN 'Investigation' Covers Months-Old News About Brown Family 'Pathologist,' 'Professor'

Source: newsbusters.org - Sunday, November 30, 2014

The establishment press's performance in Ferguson has certainly been disgraceful, especially its role in turning one local death into a national obsession. One element of that buildup involves Shawn Parcells, one of two men hired by the family of Michael Brown, the 18 year-old man who was killed in an altercation with Ferguson police officer Darren Wilson in early August, to look into his death. The press, including CNN in a video seen here , has reported much of what Parcells has claimed throughout the case with little if any skepticism, permanently poisoning the well with non-factual and doubt-inducing information feeding the left's insatiable desire for proof of incurable racism in law enforcement and America in general.

Black Friday Weekend Slows Down as Allure Fades

Source: www.breitbart.com - Sunday, November 30, 2014

.com/blogger_img_proxy/NEW YORK (AP) — Black Friday fatigue is setting in. Overall, 133.7 million people shopped in stores and online over the four-day weekend, down 5.2 percent from last year, according to a survey of 4,631 people conducted by Prosper Insights & Analytics for the trade group. Early discounting, more online shopping and a mixed economy meant fewer people shopped over Thanksgiving weekend, the National Retail Federation said Sunday. Total spending for the weekend is expected to fall 11 percent to $50.9 billion from an estimated $57.4 billion last year, the trade group estimated. Part of the reason is that Target, J.C. Penney, Macy's, Wal-Mart and other major retailers pushed fat discounts as early as Halloween. Some opened stores even earlier on Thanksgiving. All that stole some thunder from Black Friday and the rest of the weekend. Still, the preliminary data makes retailers worried that shoppers remain frugal despite improving employment and falling gas prices. Matt Shay, the trade group's CEO, said he thinks people benefiting from the recovery may not feel the need to fight crowds to get the deepest discount on a TV or toaster. And those who feel like the recession never ended may not have the money and will stretch out what they spend through Christmas. And shoppers are still feeling the effects of high food prices and stagnant wages. "While they're more optimistic, they're very cautious," Shay said. "If the deals are not right for

Meet The Doctor Who Wants Facebook To Have Access To Everyone's Medical Data

.com/blogger_img_proxy/ Leslie Saxon wants to know what your hear rate is. Saxon is an cardiologist and Founder/Executive Director of The USC Center for Body Computing , leading an effort to connect medical implants to the Internet to better monitor and treat people’s health. Speaking at a Wired Health event in the United Kingdom earlier this year, she argued that Facebook should actually be given access to all of our medical data in order to help doctors better understand certain diseases through new stores of biometric data. I recently spoke to her about her work and how she thinks the Internet and the proliferation of computer phones will change the future of healthcare. *** How did you get interested in this idea of connecting biometric implants to social networking? How does all this work? I got into this field when defibrillators became wireless, meaning we could put this $30,000 device into someone and they could basically transmit data from home with this supercomputer in their chest. I realized we could figure out how to better diagnose things in real time. I spent eight years of my life researching that and it was incredibly productive, then I got interested in this “anywhere, anytime” concept that you could use the dominant computing platform of our time—the cell phone—to deliver a lot of this care. The idea that you could use social networks to share the data with everyone who was relevant to the patient was both a way to provide data to eve

Deval Patrick: Indictment, Trial Would Have Been ‘Good for the Community’

Source: www.breitbart.com - Sunday, November 30, 2014

.com/blogger_img_proxy/ On Sunday, Gov. Deval Patrick (D-MA) added his voice to the criticism over the Ferguson grand jury decision not to incident a city police officer for the August shooting of a local teenager. Without having any facts of the case at hand, Patrick says there should have been an indictment and then criticized the lack of transparency in the case. Appearing on NBC's "Meet The Press" on November 30, Governor Patrick claimed that white Ferguson police officer Darren Wilson should have been indicted for "murder" in the August shooting of 18-year-old Michael Brown. "Without knowing all the facts, of course," Patrick began , "I wanted to see an indictment - mostly because I think a trial and the transparency of a trial is good for the community and because so many of us had the supposition that police officers are not going to be held accountable and not going to have to answer for the shooting of an unarmed black teenager." Patrick seemed to think there was a separation to be made between a fact-based finding of guilt for the officer and the unrest engulfing Ferguson because of a misunderstanding between police and the community. "That is separate and apart of the anxiety so many black people have about encounters with law enforcement and the anxiety that some in law enforcement have about their encounters with black people and the startling lack of understanding between the two," Governor Patrick said. Where to Fill Up Your Tank in Illinois for Low Gas Prices This Holiday Weekend

Source: http://ift.tt/hFWySe - Sunday, November 30, 2014

.com/blogger_img_proxy/ More Americans travel around the Thanksgiving holiday than during any other time of the year. According to the United States Department of Transportation, long-distance travel during the six-day Thanksgiving holiday period increases 54 percent. That's more even than the Christmas travel period, when long-distance travel increases only 23 percent. The USDOT reminds us that it's not only public transportation hubs that see an influx of users-individual travel also shoots up during that time. Ninety-one percent of travel during this period happens in personal cars. And although heavy media attention focuses on crowded airports and bus and train stations on the Wednesday before and Sunday after Thanksgiving, when personal vehicle trips are added to the mix the National Household Travel Survey (NHTS) reveals that Thanksgiving Day is actually a heavier long-distance travel day than Wednesday. All that driving around eats up a lot of gasoline, which eats up a lot of money. But there are ways to save money on gas, like figuring out which areas along your travel route might have the lowest prices, or even making a pit stop a few miles out of the way to save on the green. AAA Insurance says that the 2014 Thanksgiving weekend will see the lowest gas prices in four years. The current national average price of a gallon of gas is $3.24, says AreaVibes.com. Illinoisgasprices.com says the current average price of a gallon of gas in Illinois is $

Qatar slams new World Cup corruption claims

Source: http://ift.tt/eKERsB - Sunday, November 30, 2014

.com/blogger_img_proxy/ Manila (AFP) - Qatar dismissed new allegations of corruption in the bidding process for the 2022 World Cup as they basked in strong support from FIFA chief Sepp Blatter and Asian football officials. Qatar 2022 communications chief Nasser Al Khater said "reader fatigue" was setting in after a British newspaper printed fresh claims of vote-buying by 2018 hosts Russia and the wealthy Gulf state. He said it was telling that the Sunday Times sought parliamentary privilege, a defence against libel, before publishing unproven claims it says were secretly compiled by Britain's bid team for the 2018 event. "What I understand is that they went to parliament before publishing, to get parliamentary privilege," Al Khater said at the Asian Football Confederation (AFC) awards in Manila late on Sunday. "I guess that tells you the story... there's a story that came up but they went to the select committee in parliament, so already that tells me that they're looking for some protection." Asia's second World Cup enjoys staunch backing from regional officials, with Blatter earning loud applause when he told the gala dinner: "The World Cup 2022 will be played in Qatar." Controversy again engulfed Asia's second World Cup when investigator Michael Garcia disowned the findings of his report into the bidding process, as presented by FIFA. Widespread calls to make the report public have fallen on deaf ears. Al Khater said: "At this point our opinion is th

Pope urges Muslim leaders to condemn Islamist terror

Source: http://ift.tt/eKERsB - Sunday, November 30, 2014

.com/blogger_img_proxy/ Istanbul (AFP) - Pope Francis urged Muslim leaders worldwide to "clearly" condemn terrorism carried out in the name of Islam, and called for an end to the persecution of Christians in the Middle East. Francis said he had told Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan that "it would be wonderful if all the Muslim leaders of the world -- political, religious and academic, spoke up clearly and condemned" violence which damages Islam. "That would help the majority of Muslims if that came from the mouths of these political, religious and academic leaders. We all have need of a global condemnation," Francis told reporters aboard the plane taking him back to Rome after a three-day visit to Turkey. The pope acknowledged that current global crises had generated a danger of all Muslims being tarred with the same brush. Francis attacked those who say "all Muslims are terrorists", adding: "As we cannot say that all Christians are fundamentalists." In a rare joint plea, the pope and Orthodox Ecumenical Patriarch Bartholomew I spoke out against anti-Christian violence, saying the world could not stand by and allow "a Middle East without Christians." "We cannot resign ourselves to a Middle East without Christians, who have professed the name of Jesus there for two thousand years," the Church leaders said. They said the "terrible situation" of Christians calls "for an appropriate response on the part of the international community". The Argentine l

Weekend Box-Office: ‘Hunger Games’ Holds #1 Spot, ‘Imitation Game’ Leads Limited Release Field

Source: blogs.indiewire.com - Sunday, November 30, 2014

.com/blogger_img_proxy/ There are plenty of box-office naysayers out there, but the fact remains that once again we’ve experienced a dip. The domestic box-office top 12 was soft and grossed approximately $155.6 million in total this weekend, but that’s down 20% from last year when the last “Hunger Games” movie was in theaters. Not surprisingly, “The Hunger Games: Mockingjay - Part 1” took the number one spot at the holiday weekend, grossing a very healthy $56.8 million, but the picture fell 53.3% and that’s around 23% below where ‘Catching Fire’ was in week two. Still, the picture has grossed $225 million domestically in two weeks of release (‘Catching Fire’ was at $290m). But like we said last week, the true test is international, and ‘The Hunger Games’ is finally taking over overseas. Foreign grosses only overtook domestic grosses on the series for the last few weeks of ‘Catching Fire’s global run. Flash forward a year later and foreign grosses of ‘Mockingjay - Part 1’ have already overtaken the movie...

Pope's visit could draw attention to refugees in Turkey

Source: http://ift.tt/JTTGTC - Sunday, November 30, 2014

.com/blogger_img_proxy/ Istanbul, Turkey, Nov 30, 2014 / 03:08 pm ( CNA ).- The head of a charitable agency in Turkey voiced hope that Pope Francis’ visit will shine a light on the dramatic plight of refugees there, who fled the Syrian civil war and other regional conflicts. “There are 1.7 million Syrian refugees in Turkey; in Istanbul alone, there are 700,000. When you walk around downtown Istanbul, there are plenty of poor kids who beg,” said Rinaldo Marmara, president of Caritas Turkey. He voiced hope that the “Papal visit will focus the world on what we are living. We hope the world will lend us a hand to help these refugees.” “Our dream is to be able to let the refugees live here and at the same time to work in order to let them go back to their home countries,” Marmara told CNA. He explained that Caritas Turkey has several refugees camps, but “refugees want to move to the big cities, like Istanbul, where they think there are more opportunities.” Marmara met with the Pope during the three-day papal trip to Turkey at the end of November. On that trip, the Pope visited with refugees, telling them that God never forgets them. Pope Francis also celebrated Mass at the Holy Spirit Cathedral in Istanbul. Upon meeting him, Marmara presented the Holy Father with a book he had written about the history of the first Jesuits who went to evangelize Turkey. “The history of Jesuits is intimately linked to the history of the Church in Turkey. Last week, I felt part of a larger community, a community that "gets it," a community that I share many values with, and a community that inspires me to action. Since the announcement of the grand jury's decision not to indict Darren Wilson, the police officer who shot and killed unarmed black teen Mike Brown in Ferguson, MO, there have been demonstrations in many cities in America. The demonstrators march under the banners of "Justice for Mike Brown," "Hands Up Don't Shoot," and "No Justice, No Peace." The night after the announcement, there were hundreds of demonstrations all over New York City, and there was a feeling in the air that this time things might change. Or at least, this time the people won't take it anymore. The story of Mike Brown is incredibly sad, but even sadder is the fact that his death is not a new story. In the past few weeks alone, Tamir Rice, 12-years-old and unarmed, was shot by a police officer in Cleveland and Akai Gurley, 28-years-old and unarmed, was shot by a police officer in Brooklyn. I don't even need to mention the color of the victims' skin. This is what is so outraging -- the assumption that a black man is

Officer Darren Wilson resigns, Ferguson mayor says some reforms are on the way

Source: www.dailykos.com - Sunday, November 30, 2014

.com/blogger_img_proxy/ Word spread on Saturday night that Officer Darren Wilson had resigned from the Ferguson, Missouri, police department days after a grand jury failed to indict him for shooting and killing an unarmed teenager in August. On Sunday, Ferguson Mayor James Knowles said in a press conference that Wilson will not get a severance package , though Wilson's unemployment will be cushioned by hundreds of thousands of dollars in donations from people expressing their support for his actions. Because racism. Knowles also outlined some plans to improve relations between the mostly white Ferguson police force and the city's mostly black residents, including a citizen review board on police procedures, an increased stipend for police officers who actually live in Ferguson, and police academy scholarships for African Americans who would then work for the city. In the same press conference, Ferguson's police chief said he did not intend to resign.

MTP: Rich Lowry's Inconvenient Ferguson Truths Cause Panelist Outrage

National Review editor caused quite an uproar on Meet The Press for the "heresy" of citing the evidence presented to the Ferguson case grand jury which backed up the account of officer Darren Wilson. Among liberal circles, such evidence is rarely if ever cited because the truths it reveals are quite inconvenient to the narrative they have presented and continue to stick with.

Falcons Defeat Cardinals, Get First Win Outside The Division

Source: kissingsuzykolber.uproxx.com - Sunday, November 30, 2014

.com/blogger_img_proxy/ FOX It was a rare pleasant week for the top of the NFC South, as both the Saints and Falcons were victorious, over teams with winning records to boot. It’s still possible that the winner of the division finishes with 10 losses, but now it’s a bit less likely. Especially because the Saints and Falcons still have a game left against each other. Atlanta jumped out to a 17-0 lead over Arizona before the Cardinals finally got on the board thanks to a pick-six. It was only in garbage time late in the fourth quarter that Arizona scored its first offensive touchdown since Week 11. For the second week in a row, the Cardinals lost with Drew Stanton playing poorly and throwing two interceptions, including one that sealed the loss midway through the fourth quarter. It was a big day for Julio Jones, who finished with 10 catches for 189 yards and a touchdown. Consecutive losses on the road doesn’t mean the Cardinals are done, but they’re getting close to squandering the great position they set themselves in through 10 games.

China urges Taiwan to keep ties after pro-Beijing party losses

Source: mashable.com - Saturday, November 29, 2014

.com/blogger_img_proxy/ TAIPEI, Taiwan — China urged Taiwan to protect the gains of landmark cooperation between the mainland and the self-ruled island after Taiwan's pro-Beijing ruling party was routed in local elections. The defeat in Saturday's elections of the Nationalist Party, which lost nine cities and counties, including its longtime strongholds Taipei, the capital, and the major central city of Taichung, led to the resignation of Premier Jiang Yi-huah, who heads the Cabinet. President Ma Ying-jeou promised to make changes. The election losses could jeopardize six years of talks with China that have led to 21 agreements, helping to lift Taiwan's half-trillion-dollar economy, while raising Beijing's hopes for political reunification. Beijing has claimed sovereignty over Taiwan since the Chinese civil war of the 1940s, but since taking office in 2008, Ma has set aside the old disputes to ease tensions through talks. Read more... African-American Man Stopped by Michigan Cop for Walking with His Hands in His Pockets

Source: www.alternet.org - Saturday, November 29, 2014

.com/blogger_img_proxy/In Michigan, putting your hands in your pockets on a cold day counts as suspicious behavior, if you're black. An African-American man, out for a walk on a cold Michigan day, was stopped by police after a caller reported that he looked suspicious because he had his hands in his pockets. Brandon B. Waxx McKean posted video on his Facebook page showing his encounter with a police officer who briefly detained him on Thanksgiving day while he was out for a stroll. In the video the officer can be seen radioing in, asking dispatch to close out a contact file, before explaining to McKean that he was stopped because he was “making people nervous.” “Well, you were making people nervous,” the officer explained as he took out his own cellphone and began filming the encounter. “By walking by?” McKean asked. “Yeah they said you had your hands in your pockets,” the officer replied. “Wow,” McKean said. “Walking by, having your hands in your pockets makes people nervous and call the police when it’s snowing outside?” to which the officer admits, “It is.” Asked by the officer, “What are you up to today?” McKean replied, “Walking, with my hands in my pockets. Walking.” “Is it an inconvenience talking to me right now?” the officer asked. “Hell yes. Just because of the whole police situation going on across the country,” an animated McKean replied. “This is outrageous that you would let somebody tell you ‘Oh, there’s somebody walking down the street

Obama Buys 17 Titles At Independent Bookstore

Source: http://www.huffingtonpost.com - Saturday, November 29, 2014

.com/blogger_img_proxy/ WASHINGTON (AP) — President Barack Obama tried to draw attention to independently owned businesses on the Saturday after Thanksgiving, a day that is increasingly being marketed as one for deal-hungry consumers to remember to patronize these mom-and-pop outlets while doing their holiday shopping. He bought bags of books — 17 titles in all — during a stop at Politics and Prose, a popular Washington bookstore now owned by a former Washington Post reporter and his wife, also a former Post reporter who also worked for Hillary Rodham Clinton at the White House and State Department. In recent years, the Saturday after Thanksgiving has been advertised as "Small Business Saturday." It's designed to drive foot traffic to independent businesses in between the frenzy of Black Friday sales at mass retailers and the Cyber Monday deals available online. Obama browsed the bookstore's racks with his daughters, Malia and Sasha. He held one shopper's baby and chatted with author David Baldacci. While paying at the cash register, another patron encouraged Obama to close the U.S. facility in Cuba where suspected terrorists are detained. "Hope you can close Guantanamo," the patron said. "We're working on it," Obama replied, then cheerily added to the crowd of shoppers: "Any other issues?" Obama also joked, "Hope it works," when he handed his credit card to the cashier. That appeared to be a reference to when a restaurant declined his card while he din

Colleges Don't Have Much Incentive To Admit The Poorest Students Anymore

Source: http://www.huffingtonpost.com - Saturday, November 29, 2014

.com/blogger_img_proxy/WASHINGTON, D.C. -- Decked out in black tie and formal dresses, guests at Mr. Jefferson’s Capital Ball finished their salmon with horseradish sauce just as the band lured them onto the dance floor with classics including “Shout” and “My Girl.” Some of the people who paid up to $400 a couple to attend the event in the Grand Ballroom of the historic Mayflower Hotel joined in the Electric Slide. The ball was more than just another Friday night party to ease Washington into the weekend. It had the commendable purpose of raising money for scholarships to the University of Virginia. But not the kind of scholarships that go to low-income students based solely on their financial need. The proceeds from Mr. Jefferson’s Capital Ball are destined for merit aid for applicants who have the high grade-point averages and top scores on entrance tests that help institutions do well on college rankings. Merit aid can also attract middle- and upper-income students whose families can pay the rest of the tuition bill and therefore furnish badly needed revenue to colleges and universities. As institutions vie for income and prestige in this way, the net prices they’re charging the lowest-income students, after discounts and financial aid, continue to rise faster on average than the net prices they’re charging higher-income ones, according to an analysis of newly released data the universities and colleges are required to report to the U.S. Department

Businesses, Police Fear Rise in Shoplifting After Passage of Proposition 47

Source: americanpowerblog.blogspot.com - Saturday, November 29, 2014

Well, when you release convicted armed robbers, crack dealers, meth heads, drug addicts and "petty" thieves onto the streets, you have good reason to worry! Via CBS Sacramento: Proposition 47 reduced the penalties and sentences for low-level drug and property crimes. This means shoplifting, forgery, fraud, and petty theft can now be treated as misdemeanors instead of felons, allowing some criminals in jail to go free.

US top court debates if online death threats are free speech

Source: http://www.businessinsider.com - Saturday, November 29, 2014

.com/blogger_img_proxy/Washington (AFP) - The US Supreme Court will consider a groundbreaking case Monday about whether death threats posted on Facebook are liable to prosecution or whether threatening comments are protected by constitutional rights to free speech. It will be the first time the top court's nine justice -- who are not known to have Facebook accounts of their own -- will consider the limits of First Amendment protections on free speech on social media. The case involves Anthony Elonis, a rap music enthusiast who posted angry lyrics on his Facebook page aimed at his wife after she left him, taking their two children. "There's one way to love you but a thousand ways to kill you. I'm not going to rest until your body is a mess, soaked in blood and dying from all the little cuts. Hurry up and die, bitch," Elonis posted after the messy break-up ending seven years of marriage. His wife told police she was "extremely scared" and obtained a "protection from abuse" (PFA) order forbidding Elonis from getting near her. But that only provoked him further. "Fold up your PFA and put it in your pocket. Is it thick enough to stop a bullet?" he wrote on Facebook, six months after their split. His abusive language extended beyond his broken marriage. After an FBI agent visited him, he said he would blow the agent up, then threatened an amusement park he had been fired from and posted about shooting up nearby schools. He said there were "enough elementary

Wish Granted: Same Day Delivery For The Holidays

Source: miami.cbslocal.com - Saturday, November 29, 2014

Follow CBSMIAMI.COM: Facebook | Twitter NEW YORK (AP) — A procrastinator’s holiday wish come true: Presents ordered at the last minute can now show up under the Christmas tree that same day. Amazon, Target and Macy’s and other retailers are offering speedier delivery, including overnight and same-day options that will continue even past the holidays. The focus on faster shipping is one way retailers are catering to shoppers who’ve become increasingly finicky and impatient. Since the recession, it’s not enough to get lower prices; they want the deepest discounts. And when it comes to ordering online, orders need to be shipped fast. “I’ll pay extra to get something right away,” says Wendy Connors, a 47-year-old mother of three who lives in Menlo Park, California. Quick delivery is important for retailers as they head into the winter holiday shopping season, a time when they can make up to 40 percent of their annual sales. U.S. shoppers are expected to spend $61 billion online in November and December, according to research firm comScore. Retailers don’t want to overpromise on shipping offers. They can’t afford a repeat last year when UPS and FedEx failed to deliver some packages by Christmas due to a combination of poor weather and overloaded systems, causing angry customers. Neither of the top two deliverers said how many packages were delayed, but noted it was a small share of overall holiday shipments. Forrester Research analyst

Teen Missing 4 Years Found Alive, Hidden Behind False Wall

Source: http://www.huffingtonpost.com - Saturday, November 29, 2014

.com/blogger_img_proxy/ JONESBORO, Ga., Nov 29 (Reuters) - A 13-year-old boy who had been reported missing four years ago was discovered alive, hidden behind a fake wall of a home near Atlanta, Georgia, and reunited with his mother early on Saturday, police said. Five people living in the home in Jonesboro, 17 miles (28 km) south of Atlanta, were taken into custody, among them the boy's father, Gregory Jean, 37, and an adult female, said Sergeant Kevin Hughes of the Clayton County police. Jean and Samantha Joy Davis face charges of false imprisonment, cruelty to children and obstructing an officer, he said, adding that three juveniles also in the home were facing obstruction charges. The boy's mother apparently had reported him missing to child welfare but not police, and no missing person's report was filed in Clayton County, Hughes said. The teen was apparently able to get to a phone recently and contacted his mother with his whereabouts, authorities said. Clayton County police went to the home on Friday to look for the 13-year-old but Jean and Davis said they had no information about the boy, Hughes said. Several hours later, police came back and again searched the residence. While the police were in the home, the boy called his mother, who relayed to officers where her son was hidden in the house, Hughes said. "They discovered him hidden behind a false wall in the interior portion of the home," he said. The boy appeared to be in good physical health

Devin Gardner Consoled J.T. Barrett Alongside Ohio State Staff [PHOTO]

Source: detroit.cbslocal.com - Saturday, November 29, 2014

By Dan Jenkins @DanTJenkins “The Game” between Michigan and Ohio State has long been considered one of the top rivalries in all of sports. Sure, the late-November matchup has lost some luster lately — mainly due to Michigan’s woes — but the game always seems close (i.e. the last four seasons) and it seems to still mean something. Devin Gardner, a fifth-year senior, is no stranger to “The Game,” he’s started at quarterback for Michigan the last three seasons against the Buckeyes. An unranked Michigan team lost all three of those matchups, but only lost by an average of 6.7 points to Ohio State which had an average national ranking of No. 4. Gardner showed an admirable display of support for rival Buckeye quarterback J.T. Barrett when Barrett went down in the fourth quarter with a season-ending ankle injury on Saturday. Small Business Saturday Giving Big Money To Local Shops

Source: minnesota.cbslocal.com - Saturday, November 29, 2014

MINNEAPOLIS (WCCO) - Small Twin Cities shops saw big business on Saturday. Every year shoppers are encouraged to support local businesses for “Small Business Saturday,” the day after the Black Friday shopping holiday. “We will probably have our biggest day of the year,” said Paul Allbright, co-owner of Succotash in St. Paul. Succotash has been open for nearly 20 years. The shop offers everything from retro knickknacks from the ’60s and ’70s to modern day furniture. “They know their different eras, they know different collections, they know all the different designers,” Maria Manske, from St. Paul, said. “So, if you’re looking for something specific, this is really a good place to come.” What do you get for that fitness freak on your shopping list? Mill City Running in Northeast Minneapolis can be your one stop shop for athletic shoes, shirts, and energy snacks. “It’s awesome,” Heather Sawdey, from Minneapolis, said. “They have great clothes. They’re just fun, they’re really people and they’re local.” For your kids, Peapods in St. Paul brings big joy to little ones with their all-natural toys and baby care products. “We just opened the doors less than an hour ago and we got a full store,” Peapods co-owner Dan Marshall said. “It’s kind of crazy around here, and I hope every little store in the Twin Cities is doing the same.” “We have a lot of small, awesome businesses that you wouldn’t see anywhere else, and if they don’t get busin

US activists demand police reform as Ferguson cop quits

Source: http://www.businessinsider.com - Saturday, November 29, 2014

.com/blogger_img_proxy/ Ferguson (United States) (AFP) - US activists launched a week-long march in Missouri to demand sweeping police reforms as the white officer who shot dead an unarmed black teen in Ferguson resigned. The officer, 28-year-old Darren Wilson, has left the force, citing safety concerns, according to a letter published by local media Saturday. A grand jury's decision on Monday not to charge Wilson in connection with the August 9 shooting death of 18-year-old Michael Brown touched off days of sporadic violence in Ferguson, a suburb of St Louis. On Saturday, a core group of about 100 marchers, many from other states, set out on a 120-mile (192-kilometer) "Journey for Justice," heading from the St Louis suburb of Ferguson to the Missouri state capital Jefferson City. The marchers, organized by the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP), are demanding the sacking of the Ferguson police chief, nationwide police reforms and an end to racial profiling. "We will fight until hell freezes over, and then we will fight on the ice," NAACP president Cornell William Brooks told supporters at Washington Metropolitan A.M.E. Zion Church before setting out. The march is the latest in a series of protests that have taken place across the United States in the wake of the explosive grand jury decision not to indict Wilson. Wilson wrote in his letter "it is my hope that my resignation will allow the community to heal." The grand ju

Senator Schumer: Labor's share of profit should be core of 2016 Democratic agenda

Source: www.dailykos.com - Saturday, November 29, 2014

.com/blogger_img_proxy/Sen. Schumer (D-NY) wants a comprehensive focus on the middle class. In a speech that sounded more like that of a liberal economist and less like that of a United States senator from New York, Sen. Chuck Schumer (D-NY) this week outlined a path forward for a Democratic victory in 2016 that will focus on increasing middle-class incomes and using government as a shield for workers against the forces of globalization, automation, and job loss through technological efficiency. The question? Whether that agenda, specifically designed to win over white working-class voters, will come at the expense of programs and proposals that help key Democratic constituencies. Schumer noted that for the first time in American history, median wages have been in decline for a decade, even as outsourcing, technology, and efficiency have increased profits at the very top. In his view, Democrats—starting in 2009 with their ascension to the presidency and large majorities in Congress—wasted the opportunity to seize control of American politics for a generation by solving more narrow problems like healthcare reform instead of focusing on rehabilitating government as a vector for defending the middle class against the forces that are making their wages decline. Schumer claimed that while the Affordable Care Act was a good bill, it was the wrong priority for rebuilding a positive view of government for middle class Americans: After passing the stimulus,

No. 10 Michigan State Wins At Penn State, 34-10

Source: detroit.cbslocal.com - Saturday, November 29, 2014

DAN GELSTON, AP Sports Writer STATE COLLEGE, Pa. (AP) — R.J. Shelton returned the opening kickoff 90 yards for a touchdown and Jeremy Langford ran for 118 yards and two scores to help No. 10 Michigan State beat Penn State 34-10 on Saturday night. The Spartans (10-2, 7-1 Big Ten, No. 10 CFP) won their third straight game and hit the double-digit win mark for the fourth time in the last five seasons under coach Mark Dantonio. The Spartans have four of their six 10-plus win seasons in school history under Dantonio. Shelton doused the enthusiasm of the emotional senior day festivities at Beaver Stadium when he used all of 14 seconds to dart through defenders for the score. From there, the Spartans never really dazzled against the Nittany Lions (6-6, 2-6). Connor Cook threw a 10-yard TD pass and Langford chipped in with a 3-yard score in the third quarter to methodically put it away. The Nittany Lions honored the 17 seniors who weathered four coaches, the Jerry Sandusky child sex abuse scandal and the resulting NCAA sanctions. The NCAA lifted the bowl ban this season and the Nittany Lions await their destination. Under first-year coach James Franklin, the Nittany Lions finished 2-6 after a 4-0 start. Christian Hackenberg, the quarterback predicted for NFL stardom under former coach Bill O’Brien, has sputtered on Franklin’s watch. He has been sacked over 40 times behind an oft-maligned offensive line and threw 15 interceptions, the kin

Xbox One beats PS4 on Black Friday, according to market-research firm

Source: venturebeat.com - Saturday, November 29, 2014

.com/blogger_img_proxy/ Microsoft really wants to win this holiday season, and it looks like the price cuts and game bundles are working. The Xbox One dominated Black Friday sales, according to market-research firm InfoScout . Microsoft’s latest system made up 53 percent of all console sales on one of the biggest shopping days of the year. Sony’s PS4, meanwhile, managed to capture 31 percent. The Xbox One was on sale for $330 at a number of big stores like Target and Walmart, and Microsoft bundled it with big games like Assassin’s Creed IV: Black Flag and Unity. That helped gamers choose the Xbox One over the PlayStation 4, which was $400 bundled with Bungie’s sci-fi shooter Destiny. Above: A chart of console sales. Image Credit: InfoScout This is likely a good sign for Microsoft. The PlayStation 4 has built up a substantial lead over the Xbox One since each system debuted last November. Microsoft dropped the price from $500 to $400 and then to $350 until January. If Microsoft can maintain this market share until then, it could make a dent in Sony overall market share. To get this data, InfoScout uses two smartphone apps that reward consumers for uploading their purchases by taking pictures of their receipts. The intelligence firm tracks over 200,000 shoppers, and it gets more than 125,000 receipts on an average day. On Black Friday, consumers uploaded more than 182,000 receipts, which helped InfoScout declare Xbox One the Black Friday winner. While Mic
