NEW YORK (AP) — Black Friday fatigue is setting in. Overall, 133.7 million people shopped in stores and online over the four-day weekend, down 5.2 percent from last year, according to a survey of 4,631 people conducted by Prosper Insights & Analytics for the trade group. Early discounting, more online shopping and a mixed economy meant fewer people shopped over Thanksgiving weekend, the National Retail Federation said Sunday. Total spending for the weekend is expected to fall 11 percent to $50.9 billion from an estimated $57.4 billion last year, the trade group estimated. Part of the reason is that Target, J.C. Penney, Macy's, Wal-Mart and other major retailers pushed fat discounts as early as Halloween. Some opened stores even earlier on Thanksgiving. All that stole some thunder from Black Friday and the rest of the weekend. Still, the preliminary data makes retailers worried that shoppers remain frugal despite improving employment and falling gas prices. Matt Shay, the trade group's CEO, said he thinks people benefiting from the recovery may not feel the need to fight crowds to get the deepest discount on a TV or toaster. And those who feel like the recession never ended may not have the money and will stretch out what they spend through Christmas. On Sunday, Gov. Deval Patrick (D-MA) added his voice to the criticism over the Ferguson grand jury decision not to incident a city police officer for the August shooting of a local teenager. Without having any facts of the case at hand, Patrick says there should have been an indictment and then criticized the lack of transparency in the case. Appearing on NBC's "Meet The Press" on November 30, Governor Patrick claimed that white Ferguson police officer Darren Wilson should have been indicted for "murder" in the August shooting of 18-year-old Michael Brown. "Without knowing all the facts, of course," Patrick began , "I wanted to see an indictment - mostly because I think a trial and the transparency of a trial is good for the community and because so many of us had the supposition that police officers are not going to be held accountable and not going to have to answer for the shooting of an unarmed black teenager." Patrick seemed to think there was a separation to be made between a fact-based finding of guilt for the officer and the unrest engulfing Ferguson because of a misunderstanding between police and the community. "That is separate and apart of the anxiety so many black people have about encounters with law enforcement and the anxiety that some in law enforcement have about their encounters with black people and the startling lack of understanding between the two," Governor Patrick said. More Americans travel around the Thanksgiving holiday than during any other time of the year. According to the United States Department of Transportation, long-distance travel during the six-day Thanksgiving holiday period increases 54 percent. That's more even than the Christmas travel period, when long-distance travel increases only 23 percent. The USDOT reminds us that it's not only public transportation hubs that see an influx of users-individual travel also shoots up during that time. Ninety-one percent of travel during this period happens in personal cars. And although heavy media attention focuses on crowded airports and bus and train stations on the Wednesday before and Sunday after Thanksgiving, when personal vehicle trips are added to the mix the National Household Travel Survey (NHTS) reveals that Thanksgiving Day is actually a heavier long-distance travel day than Wednesday. All that driving around eats up a lot of gasoline, which eats up a lot of money. But there are ways to save money on gas, like figuring out which areas along your travel route might have the lowest prices, or even making a pit stop a few miles out of the way to save on the green. While most of the focus this weekend was on a certain trailer, the holiday box office was fairly tepid. In at number 1 is The Hunger Games: Mockingjay – Part 1 with $56 million. Although last week’s big winner retained its top spot, it did fall about 56%, on a holiday weekend no less. Regardless, Mockingjay – Part 1 is doing just fine at the box office, with $225 million domestic and $480 million worldwide. There are plenty of box-office naysayers out there, but the fact remains that once again we’ve experienced a dip. The domestic box-office top 12 was soft and grossed approximately $155.6 million in total this weekend, but that’s down 20% from last year when the last “Hunger Games” movie was in theaters. Not surprisingly, “The Hunger Games: Mockingjay - Part 1” took the number one spot at the holiday weekend, grossing a very healthy $56.8 million, but the picture fell 53.3% and that’s around 23% below where ‘Catching Fire’ was in week two. Still, the picture has grossed $225 million domestically in two weeks of release (‘Catching Fire’ was at $290m). But like we said last week, the true test is international, and ‘The Hunger Games’ is finally taking over overseas. Foreign grosses only overtook domestic grosses on the series for the last few weeks of ‘Catching Fire’s global run. It's handmade by the Godparents of our sons and usually contains some biscuits, truffles, chutney and crackers. I look forward to seeing what's in this hamper weeks before Christmas. Now I know it's not an easy option, especially given that a lot of hamper contents have a short shelf life, but it really is one of the those presents that makes the hair stand up on your arms. To think someone has gone to all that trouble... just for you. I don't want to come over all soppy, but it really is the spirit of Christmas. When you walk around downtown Istanbul, there are plenty of poor kids who beg,” said Rinaldo Marmara, president of Caritas Turkey. He voiced hope that the “Papal visit will focus the world on what we are living. We hope the world will lend us a hand to help these refugees.” “Our dream is to be able to let the refugees live here and at the same time to work in order to let them go back to their home countries,” Marmara told CNA. He explained that Caritas Turkey has several refugees camps, but “refugees want to move to the big cities, like Istanbul, where they think there are more opportunities.” Marmara met with the Pope during the three-day papal trip to Turkey at the end of November. Last week was inspiring. Since coming to New York two years ago, I have been working to build a community for myself. In many ways I have succeeded -- I found people that I am honored to call friends, I have good neighbors, and I enjoy the community of my school. But last week was different. Last week, I felt part of a larger community, a community that "gets it," a community that I share many values with, and a community that inspires me to action. Since the announcement of the grand jury's decision not to indict Darren Wilson, the police officer who shot and killed unarmed black teen Mike Brown in Ferguson, MO, there have been demonstrations in many cities in America. The demonstrators march under the banners of "Justice for Mike Brown," "Hands Up Don't Shoot," and "No Justice, No Peace." The night after the announcement, there were hundreds of demonstrations all over New York City, and there was a feeling in the air that this time things might change. Or at least, this time the people won't take it anymore. The story of Mike Brown is incredibly sad, but even sadder is the fact that his death is not a new story. In the past few weeks alone, Tamir Rice, 12-years-old and unarmed, was shot by a police officer in Cleveland and Akai Gurley, 28-years-old and unarmed, was shot by a police officer in Brooklyn. On Sunday, Ferguson Mayor James Knowles said in a press conference that Wilson will not get a severance package , though Wilson's unemployment will be cushioned by hundreds of thousands of dollars in donations from people expressing their support for his actions. Knowles also outlined some plans to improve relations between the mostly white Ferguson police force and the city's mostly black residents, including a citizen review board on police procedures, an increased stipend for police officers who actually live in Ferguson, and police academy scholarships for African Americans who would then work for the city. The white police officer who killed Michael Brown has resigned from the Ferguson Police Department, nearly four months after the confrontation that fuelled protests across the US.
In Michigan, putting your hands in your pockets on a cold day counts as suspicious behavior, if you're black. An African-American man, out for a walk on a cold Michigan day, was stopped by police after a caller reported that he looked suspicious because he had his hands in his pockets. Brandon B. Waxx McKean posted video on his Facebook page showing his encounter with a police officer who briefly detained him on Thanksgiving day while he was out for a stroll. In the video the officer can be seen radioing in, asking dispatch to close out a contact file, before explaining to McKean that he was stopped because he was “making people nervous.” “Well, you were making people nervous,” the officer explained as he took out his own cellphone and began filming the encounter. “By walking by?” McKean asked. “Yeah they said you had your hands in your pockets,” the officer replied. “Wow,” McKean said. “Walking by, having your hands in your pockets makes people nervous and call the police when it’s snowing outside?” to which the officer admits, “It is.” Asked by the officer, “What are you up to today?” McKean replied, “Walking, with my hands in my pockets. Washington (AFP) - The US Supreme Court will consider a groundbreaking case Monday about whether death threats posted on Facebook are liable to prosecution or whether threatening comments are protected by constitutional rights to free speech. It will be the first time the top court's nine justice -- who are not known to have Facebook accounts of their own -- will consider the limits of First Amendment protections on free speech on social media. The case involves Anthony Elonis, a rap music enthusiast who posted angry lyrics on his Facebook page aimed at his wife after she left him, taking their two children. "There's one way to love you but a thousand ways to kill you. I'm not going to rest until your body is a mess, soaked in blood and dying from all the little cuts. Hurry up and die, bitch," Elonis posted after the messy break-up ending seven years of marriage. His wife told police she was "extremely scared" and obtained a "protection from abuse" (PFA) order forbidding Elonis from getting near her. But that only provoked him further. "Fold up your PFA and put it in your pocket. Is it thick enough to stop a bullet?" he wrote on Facebook, six months after their split. His abusive language extended beyond his broken marriage. After an FBI agent visited him, he said he would blow the agent up, then threatened an amusement park he had been fired from and posted about shooting up nearby schools. JONESBORO, Ga., Nov 29 (Reuters) - A 13-year-old boy who had been reported missing four years ago was discovered alive, hidden behind a fake wall of a home near Atlanta, Georgia, and reunited with his mother early on Saturday, police said. Five people living in the home in Jonesboro, 17 miles (28 km) south of Atlanta, were taken into custody, among them the boy's father, Gregory Jean, 37, and an adult female, said Sergeant Kevin Hughes of the Clayton County police. Jean and Samantha Joy Davis face charges of false imprisonment, cruelty to children and obstructing an officer, he said, adding that three juveniles also in the home were facing obstruction charges. The boy's mother apparently had reported him missing to child welfare but not police, and no missing person's report was filed in Clayton County, Hughes said. The teen was apparently able to get to a phone recently and contacted his mother with his whereabouts, authorities said. Clayton County police went to the home on Friday to look for the 13-year-old but Jean and Davis said they had no information about the boy, Hughes said. Several hours later, police came back and again searched the residence. While the police were in the home, the boy called his mother, who relayed to officers where her son was hidden in the house, Hughes said. "They discovered him hidden behind a false wall in the interior portion of the home," he said. The boy appeared to be in good physical health

Ferguson (United States) (AFP) - US activists launched a week-long march in Missouri to demand sweeping police reforms as the white officer who shot dead an unarmed black teen in Ferguson resigned. The officer, 28-year-old Darren Wilson, has left the force, citing safety concerns, according to a letter published by local media Saturday. A grand jury's decision on Monday not to charge Wilson in connection with the August 9 shooting death of 18-year-old Michael Brown touched off days of sporadic violence in Ferguson, a suburb of St Louis. On Saturday, a core group of about 100 marchers, many from other states, set out on a 120-mile (192-kilometer) "Journey for Justice," heading from the St Louis suburb of Ferguson to the Missouri state capital Jefferson City. The marchers, organized by the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP), are demanding the sacking of the Ferguson police chief, nationwide police reforms and an end to racial profiling. Sen. Schumer (D-NY) wants a comprehensive focus on the middle class. In a speech that sounded more like that of a liberal economist and less like that of a United States senator from New York, Sen. Chuck Schumer (D-NY) this week outlined a path forward for a Democratic victory in 2016 that will focus on increasing middle-class incomes and using government as a shield for workers against the forces of globalization, automation, and job loss through technological efficiency. The question? Whether that agenda, specifically designed to win over white working-class voters, will come at the expense of programs and proposals that help key Democratic constituencies. Schumer noted that for the first time in American history, median wages have been in decline for a decade, even as outsourcing, technology, and efficiency have increased profits at the very top. Microsoft really wants to win this holiday season, and it looks like the price cuts and game bundles are working. The Xbox One dominated Black Friday sales, according to market-research firm InfoScout . Microsoft’s latest system made up 53 percent of all console sales on one of the biggest shopping days of the year. Sony’s PS4, meanwhile, managed to capture 31 percent. The Xbox One was on sale for $330 at a number of big stores like Target and Walmart, and Microsoft bundled it with big games like Assassin’s Creed IV: Black Flag and Unity.
