10 great scenic drives around the world … that you’ve probably never heard of

Source: www.theguardian.com - Sunday, April 19, 2015

A great driving route doesn’t always have to mean an epic road trip. Get behind the wheel for these journeys in the US, Spain, Switzerland, Japan and Norway and you’ll still enjoy the experience of stunning views and winding roads The twisting Sa Calobra highway in Mallorca sneaks through impossibly narrow gorges, as well as featuring an epic 360-degree curve, the Nus de Sa Calobra. Snaking through the rocky landscape of the island, the eight-mile stretch of tarmac is also steep. Built in such a way as to avoid using tunnels, a fair proportion of the road has a gradient of more than 7%. If you really want a challenge, try tackling it by bike. Continue reading...

Sony's new flagship smartphone has an image-stabilizing selfie camera

Source: www.engadget.com - Sunday, April 19, 2015

.com/blogger_img_proxy/ Sony's unveiled its new smartphone in Japan, the Xperia Z4, and like you might tell from the press images, it's mighty familiar one from a company still looking for its next big hit. Yep there's a lot of similarities compared to the Z3 (a phone that we were pretty happy with), including a 5.2-inch screen, metal frame, support for Hi-Res audio and the same wide-angle 25mm lens on the main camera. Upgrades since last year's model include a frame that's both thinner (down to under 7 mm) and lighter, while camera upgrades are focused on the front, which now gets the same wide-angle lens of the primary shooter as well as digital image stabilization to keep your selfie game completely on point. Sony's also added timer functions for improved posing and group selfies - with or without a stick . The phone launches this summer in Japan, in four shades of metal finish, but no word on where (or if) it'll start its world tour after that. However, we'd put money on a very similar smartphone appearing at some point. Filed under: Cellphones , Mobile , Sony Comments Via: Engadget Japanese Source: Sony Mobile Japan

World Shames Australia For "Unfair" Emissions Target

The Net Neutrality Debate Is Coming To Australia

Source: www.buzzfeed.com - Sunday, April 19, 2015

.com/blogger_img_proxy/ Optus CEO opens a can of worms. Optus CEO Allan Lew has hinted that he'd like to charge streaming services such as Netflix, Presto and Stan extra to ensure a quality service. Lew made the comments at the Commsday summit in Sydney on Monday morning, where he said Optus would consider charging services a premium fee "to ensure that the optimised, or the best customer experience is achieved by the end user. "We need to make sure that the [over-the-top providers] — whether they're Netflix or others — understand that to preserve the network quality and give you an HD video in the homes, they need to work collaboratively with us," Fairfax reports. At the same time, Lew, the CEO of one of Australia's biggest ISPs, said Optus would "continue to preserve Net Neutrality." Roslan Rahman / Getty Images Just last week Netflix re-affirmed its commitment to Net Neutrality. In an investor note during its quarterly earnings report last week, Netflix said it regretted a deal it gave to Optus and iiNet customers which allowed them to stream as many shows as they wanted without it counting towards their monthly data limit. Netflix said this was a violation of its belief in Net Neutrality. Getty Images Latam / Getty Images What is Net Neutrality? Net neutrality, or the Open Internet, is the concept that all traffic and data online should be treated equally, regardless of which ISP a user is signed up to. Lessons from a social media stoush

Source: blogs.crikey.com.au - Sunday, April 19, 2015

.com/blogger_img_proxy/Many thanks to Wendy Oakes, Senior Policy and Advocacy Manager, Heart Foundation NSW for this insight into using social media for public health advocacy. Wendy writes: Mentioning e-cigarettes on any public platform can be a daunting experience. While social media is a potential tool for public health advocacy the reality is that in the area of e-cigarettes, noisy, strident ‘vapers’ often monopolise the discourse forcing many supporters of e-cigarette regulation into silence. This article is a reflection on the Heart Foundation’s current experience with a YouTube video clip calling for regulation of e-cigarettes in NSW. First some background. The Heart Foundation in NSW is currently implementing an advocacy strategy to persuade the NSW Government to regulate e-cigarettes under our existing State tobacco control legislation. With the recent State election on 28 March 2015, it has been an ideal time to drive our advocacy campaign calling for an amendment to NSW legislation to effect: A ban on sales and marketing of e-cigarettes to children and A ban on the use of e-cigarettes in public places where smoking is already banned. We are not calling for a ban on the sale of e-cigarettes to adults in NSW nor would the amendments stop adult smokers from continuing to buy or use e-cigarettes as a replacement for tobacco products. But what we have found is that the most vocal and frequent social media responders actually pay little attention

White House Condemns ISIS Massacre Of Christians In Libya

Source: patdollard.com - Sunday, April 19, 2015

.com/blogger_img_proxy/ Excerpted from The Hill : An Obama administration official late Sunday condemned the mass murder of Ethiopian Christians in Libya, purportedly by terrorists affiliated with the Islamic State in Iraq and Syria “We express our condolences to the families of the victims and our support to the Ethiopian government and people as they grieve for their fellow citizens,” National Security Council spokesperson Bernadette Meehan said in a statement. “That these terrorists killed these men solely because of their faith lays bare the terrorists’ vicious, senseless brutality. This atrocity once again underscores the urgent need for a political resolution to the conflict in Libya to empower a unified Libyan rejection of terrorist groups,” she added. “With the force of this shared history behind them, people across all faiths will remain united in the face of the terrorists’ barbarity,” she said. “The United States stands with them. While these dehumanizing acts of terror aim to test the world’s resolve – as groups throughout history have – none have the power to vanquish the powerful core of moral decency which binds humanity and which will ultimately prove the terrorists’ undoing.” Keep readin g

Star Wars : Rogue One plot, concept art

Source: moviehole.net - Sunday, April 19, 2015

.com/blogger_img_proxy/ Those rumoured plot details for “Star Wars : Rogue One” are true, it seems. Felicity Jones Producer Kathleen Kennedy has confirmed that Gareth Edward’s upcoming standalone “Star Wars” adventure will be a direct prequel to 1977’s “Star Wars : A New Hope”. In it, a group of rebels band together on a mission to steal the plans for the original Death Star. Felicity Jones will play a rebel leader. No word on who Ben Mendelsohn, reportedly in talks as of last month, is playing. These “Star Wars” standalone films will be classified as “Anthology” films. “Star Wars: Rogue One” Logo Speaking at a panel at Star Wars Celebration in Anaheim this past weekend, Edwards said : “It comes down to a group of individuals that don’t have magic powers, that have to bring hope to the galaxy. It’s about the fact that god’s not coming to save us, and we’re on our own. The absence of the Jedi is omnipresent in the film. It hangs over the whole movie. You can find a shaky bootlegged copy of the proof of concept teaser online, that was shown at Star Wars Celebration. Some great concept art was also shown, see below : Rogue One concept art! http://ift.tt/1IZyACg — Bryan Bishop (@bcbishop) April 19, 2015

Humanitarian Crises Mount With Fighting Across Iraq

Source: news.antiwar.com - Sunday, April 19, 2015

Whether it’s ISIS taking over a city, Iraqi ground troops “liberating” a city, or the two sides simply fighting inconclusively, the fighting across Iraq is bringing humanitarian calamity with it, with new crises cropping up seemingly every few days. UN officials warned that the recent fighting over the Anbar capital city of Ramadi has displaced at least 90,000 civilians . Refugees claim the city of 500,000 is almost empty, so it could be many more. ISIS is winning there, but even when ISIS loses, the situation isn’t any better, with Shi’ite militias spending the last two weeks carrying out a bloody campaign of looting and lynching around the recently “liberated” Tikrit. The Sunni villages on the outskirts of Tikrit, similarly taken over by the militias in anticipation of the Tikrit offensive, were wiped out almost entirely, with militia forces burning many homes to the ground. This has been a recurring problem across the Iraq-ISIS war, with Sunni Arabs facing either the rule of ISIS Islamists, or the bloody crackdowns that inevitably follow when the Shi’ites expel ISIS. Thus the civilians of Ramadi, the latest city to be ravaged by war, are faced with two bad choices, staying in what is almost certain to be an ISIS takeover, or fleeing to an uncertain future as internally displaced persons in a country where displaced Sunni Arabs are met with suspicion and hostility.

Report: Eagles to Sign Tim Tebow

Source: www.phillymag.com - Sunday, April 19, 2015

.com/blogger_img_proxy/ Tim Tebow. Photo courtesy of USA Today. It turns out that when Tim Tebow worked out for the Eagles last month, Chip Kelly liked what he saw. According to Jay Glazer of Fox Sports , the team will sign Tebow tomorrow as they begin their offseason program. Per Glazer, Tebow is being looked at as a quarterback. When asked about Tebow during the NFL owners meetings, Kelly said simply: “I’ve always been a fan of Tim.” What to make of the signing? There’s obviously no guarantee that Tebow will stick on the 53-man roster. The Eagles have 90 spots to work with in the offseason, and apparently Kelly thinks it makes sense to use one of them on Tebow. It’s hard to believe that Tebow would have any chance to make the squad as a straight-up quarterback. But maybe Kelly believes Tebow can fill some kind of specialized role. Or maybe he just needs another arm for the spring. Currently, the Eagles have four quarterbacks on the roster: Sam Bradford , Mark Sanchez , Matt Barkley and G.J. Kinne . Tebow will be the fifth, but it’s unclear when Bradford will be ready to practice. We’ll see if the Eagles add another quarterback in the draft later this month. Tebow spent the 2013 offseason with the Patriots but was released as the team cut down the roster to 53. The last time he actually played in the NFL was in 2012 with the Jets. He only attempted eight passes that season and ran for 102 yards on 32 carries. A Heisman Trophy winner and two-time nation

“A Mama Like You Needs A Muu-Muu”: How I Learned To Stop Worrying And Love The Booty

Source: junkee.com - Sunday, April 19, 2015

.com/blogger_img_proxy/ This is an extract from She’s Having a Laugh – 25 of Australia’s funniest women on life, love and comedy, which is out April 19 through Affirm Press. The collection also features work from Annabel Crabb, Corinne Grant, Yumi Stynes, Gretel Killeen, and more. – In 2011, when I was writing my first solo stand-up show, Australian Booty , I decided to pose (almost completely) nude for my poster. The image was a reappropriation of the American Beauty shot featuring the minuscule Mena Suvari lying naked on a bed of roses (which was in turn an appropriation of a famous photo of Bette Midler taken by Annie Leibovitz). The visual concept cut to the heart of my show: curvaceous, size-16 brown girl smashes her thick thighs and fat ass into the public view with the by-line ‘Don’t hate me because I’m bootiful’. Reclaiming the term ‘fatty-boom-boom’ was a thoroughly emotional, intense, loving and joyous experience. Writing the show was like being naked in a deluxe car wash, without a car. The work shook me through massive personal blocks, spun me around huge memories, drenched me in heartbreaks and buffed the mirrors of my triumphs. My aim in creating the show was to make people (especially women) laugh, as I laid bare my personal stories on the path to self-love and booty pride. Like any big event – such as school formals, graduations, significant birthdays, Tinder dates, weddings and opening nights – once the venue’s booked, the greatest conc

It was part of a more extensive series on depression, entrepreneurs and startups . Since I’m still getting emails about it, I thought I’d republish the Q&A here. Q: How common is the issue of depression in the startup world? A: Very common, although it is rarely discussed. While the line between stress, deep anxiety, and depression often blurs, most entrepreneurs struggle with broad mental health issues at various points in their lives. Q: How hard was it to acknowledge your struggle to yourself? And how hard was it to explain it to your partners and your peers? A: Initially it was extremely hard. When I was in my mid-20s, running a successful company and clinically depressed, I was afraid to talk to anyone other than my psychiatrist about it. I was ashamed that I was even seeing a psychiatrist. I was afraid people wouldn’t take me seriously, or would stop respecting me, if I talked about how bad I was feeling. The only peopl

US slams 'brutal' purported massacre of Ethiopian Christians by IS

Source: http://ift.tt/eKERsB - Sunday, April 19, 2015

.com/blogger_img_proxy/ Washington (AFP) - The White House condemned the reported execution of 30 Ethiopian Christians in Libya as "brutal mass murder," following a video released by Islamic State militants claiming the killings. The 29-minute video purports to show militants holding two groups of captives, described in text captions as "followers of the cross from the enemy Ethiopian Church." A masked fighter in black brandishing a pistol makes a statement threatening Christians if they do not convert to Islam. Washington decried the killings and called for stability in Libya, which has been mired in political chaos and unrest since the 2011 uprising that toppled former strongman Moamer Kadhafi. "The United States condemns in the strongest terms the brutal mass murder purportedly of Ethiopian Christians by ISIL-affiliated terrorists in Libya," National Security Council spokeswoman Bernadette Meehan said in a statement. "This atrocity once again underscores the urgent need for a political resolution to the conflict in Libya to empower a unified Libyan rejection of terrorist groups." Meehan slammed faith-based killings and said the United States would fight back against "dehumanizing acts of terror." Alberta’s election about nothing: PCs looking like a party that will say and do anything just to maintain power

Source: news.nationalpost.com - Sunday, April 19, 2015

.com/blogger_img_proxy/ Analysis Travel through Calgary on a sunny spring day, and you’re as likely to find Calgary Flames jerseys and car flags as election signs. The team is in the playoffs, and patio weather has arrived. The fun isn’t limited to Cowtown. Edmonton, the inaptly named City of Champions, is all a-chatter about first-round draft pick Connor McDavid — the once-in-a-decade talent who will restore the city’s honour and ensure Alberta continues to welcome a Stanley Cup more often than a new government. Screengrab The "Bring Your Wife's Pie" ad. Polls are suggesting an honest-to-God race, but the province is hardly afire with democratic zeal. This election was called a year ahead of its legislated date for strategic reasons; the PCs understood its main rival, the Wildrose, to be near-fatally weakened by last December’s mass floor crossing. Now was just the time to strike the fatal blow. Until Sunday, the the only items that had gained any kind of currency were posters touting an auction of rural wives’ pies, campaign signs defaced to spell the word penis, and fights about the origins of stock photos. It’s been an election about nothing — nothing besides jokes about penises and pie. Jim Prentice, the man who was going to save the 43-year-old Progressive Conservatives, is failing to connect with voters. His lines are rote: He, too, was “disappointed” with previous governments. He’s going to get the province off the “roller coaster” of oil and ga

Chris Wallace Tries To Get Bernie Sanders To Attack Clinton And Fails

Source: crooksandliars.com - Sunday, April 19, 2015

.com/blogger_img_proxy/ Fox News Sunday host Chris Wallace did his best to make his interview with potential 2016 presidential candidate Sen. Bernie Sanders all about the Democratic frontrunner, Hillary Clinton and to get Sanders to attack Clinton personally, but Sanders wasn't biting. Every time Wallace asked Sanders about Clinton, he turned it back to his stance on the issues, whether it be campaign finance laws, our rotten trade deals, our tax policies that have enriched the one percent, the race to the bottom on wages or the deterioration of the middle class. If Sanders does throw his hat into the ring, whether anyone believes he has any chance of actually winning the nomination or not, I think he'll be good for the debate and forcing the candidates to discuss what they plan to do to address the very issues he brought up here. Much to the chagrin of the likes of Chris Wallace, it appears he plans to do that without giving Republicans sound bites to use in their attack ads against Hillary Clinton. Transcript via Fox : WALLACE: Senator, you say that you are considering running against Hillary Clinton, among other reasons, because you doubt whether or not she's willing to take on the billionaires in America. Here's what she said during a rollout in Iowa this week. read more

Gasol’s seat-of-his-pants assist turns Bulls’ blooper into highlight

Source: hangtime.blogs.nba.com - Sunday, April 19, 2015

VIDEO: Gasol’s sit-down pass CHICAGO – It wasn’t a planned play. Which is to say, it wasn’t preordained. But Pau Gasol still felt obliged to thank The Coach Upstairs as he headed upcourt, subtly making the sign of the cross in gratitude for the blessing that just had befallen him and his team. The Chicago Bulls’ All-Star center turned a near-blooper into something highlight-worthy late in the third quarter of his team’s playoff opener against Milwaukee Saturday night. Spinning but losing his balance along the left side of the lane, Gasol fell to the court, his back to the baseline as his man, Bucks’ John Henson , backed off in anticipation of a likely turnover. But as Gasol landed on butt, momentum toppling him onto his back, he managed to shovel a bounce pass to teammate Taj Gibson . Gibson went up strong, Henson a little late and too far under the rim to successfully challenge the dunk. The bucket pushed Chicago’s lead – as slim as three points earlier in the quarter – to 86-73, and it generated some chatter after the Bulls practice Sunday. “No, I didn’t consciously see him,” Gasol admitted. “I was just trying to react to an unexpected fall, and luckily he was in the right spot at the right time. And I was able to instinctively make a good pass. “I saw him and I tried to bounce it to him. He had good position. Probably the defense thought I was going to turn it over.” Gibson had been asked about the play moments before. “We wat

Hundreds of migrants feared dead in Mediterranean shipwreck that could be the ‘biggest human tragedy of the last few years’

Source: news.nationalpost.com - Sunday, April 19, 2015

.com/blogger_img_proxy/ ROME — A crowded fishing boat that one survivor said carried 700 migrants capsized north of Libya overnight, and only a few dozen people were rescued Sunday, raising fears that it could become the Mediterranean’s deadliest known migrant sea disaster. The capsizing prompted more dismay among exasperated Italian officials, refugee aid officials agencies and Pope Francis, all of whom are demanding more European or international action to stop a deadly tide of migration. Migrants have aimed for Europe’s shores for many years, fleeing war, persecution and conflict in Africa, the Middle East and Asia. But the turmoil and warfare in Libya has made it easier for smugglers to take to the sea. Rescuers Sunday were “checking who is alive and who is dead” among the bodies floating on the surface, said Maltese Prime Minister Joseph Muscat, whose tiny Mediterranean nation joined the rescue operations. He called it the “biggest human tragedy of the last few years.” “Nobody should be allowed to die this way,” he said. The 20-metre vessel may have overturned because migrants rushed to one side of the craft late Saturday night when they saw an approaching Portuguese-flagged container ship, the King Jacob, which the Italian Coast Guard had dispatched to help them. The Coast Guard said at least 28 survivors had been rescued by Sunday morning. Muscat put the number of survivors at 50, and International Organization for Migration spokesman Joel Millma

Hundreds show up to 10-year-olds birthday party

Source: fox2now.com - Sunday, April 19, 2015

SHAKOPEE, MN – A young Minnesota girl– who did not receive one ‘yes’ to her birthday party invitation– is now feeling the love from, not just her community, but the entire state. Hundreds came out to Memorial Park in Shakopee to help Mackenzie Moretter celebrate her tenth birthday. Mackenzie has a rare genetic disorder called Sotos syndrome. Her parents say it makes it harder for her to make friends. When no one at her school accepted her invite to Saturday’s party, Mackenzie’s mom, Jenny, asked in a few Facebook groups for girls around MacKenzie’s age to show up. But it was not just a few young girls who saw that posting. Everyone from strangers to firefighters, Snoopy, and even a Vikings player attended today’s celebration. (Jenny Moretter/MacKenzie’s Mom) “They all want the same thing and that’s just to be accepted and have friends and be loved.” Some of the people at Saturday’s party traveled from Wisconsin to attend. Mackenzie said this was the best birthday of her life.

Princeton prof: Kill severely disabled infants under Obamacare

Source: www.wnd.com - Sunday, April 19, 2015

.com/blogger_img_proxy/ In a radio interview Sunday, Princeton University ethics professor Peter Singer argued it is “reasonable” for government or private insurance companies to deny treatment to severely disabled babies. Singer contended the health-care system under Obamacare should be more overt about rationing and that the country should acknowledge the necessity of “intentionally ending the lives of severely disabled infants.” Throughout the interview, Singer repeatedly referred to a disabled infant as “it.” Singer was speaking on the “Aaron Klein Investigative Radio” broadcast on New York’s AM 970 The Answer and Philadelphia’s NewsTalk 990 AM. The Princeton professor is known for his controversial views on abortion and infanticide. He essentially argues the right to life is related to a being’s capacity for intelligence and to hold life preferences, which in turn is directly related to a capacity to feel and comprehend pain and pleasure. Klein’s interview with Singer started out on the topic of the professor’s new book about charity, “The Most Good You Can Do: How Effective Altruism Is Changing Ideas About Living Ethically.” The conversation turned to the issue of terminating disabled infants when Klein asked whether the Singer believes health-care rationing under Obamacare will become more prevalent. Peter Singer Singer told Klein rationing is already happening, explaining doctors and hospitals routinely make decisions based on costs. “It’s diffe

Tim Tebow is signing with the Eagles

Source: http://ift.tt/eKERsB - Sunday, April 19, 2015

.com/blogger_img_proxy/ Tim Tebow is back in the NFL. The Philadelphia Eagles will sign Tebow to a one-year contract on Monday, according to Fox Sports' Jay Glazer and widespread reports. Tebow has been out of the league and working as an ESPN college football commentator since he got cut by the New England Patriots before the 2013 season. He worked out with Philadelphia in March. That workout was apparently good enough to get him a contract. He still has a long way to go. NFL teams are allowed to carry 90 players at this point in the league year. That number has to be cut to 53 by Week 1. The Eagles also have a crowded depth chart at quarterback. Philly traded for Sam Bradford and re-sign Mark Sanchez this offseason. The No. 3 quarterback at the moment is Matt Barkley, who was a fourth-round draft pick in 2013. Tebow reportedly spent his 18 months out of the league re-learning how to play the quarterback position . He has his work cut out for him, but he now has a chance to make an NFL team. Education debt nearly half of government 'assets'

Source: www.wnd.com - Sunday, April 19, 2015

(ZeroHedge) On Friday we asked if the student debt bubble was about to witness its 2007 moment. In July of that year, all three ratings agencies turned aggressively negative on subprime-related MBS and their collective actions triggered a pre-crisis crisis in Canada where billions of asset-backed commercial paper stopped rolling in August, offering those who were inclined to take notice a window into what the financial would look like just one year later. Earlier this month, Moody’s put some $3 billion in student loan-backed ABS on review for downgrade citing a risk of default in some tranches. As a reminder, here’s the rationale: The reviews for downgrade are a result of the increased risk that the tranches will not fully pay down by their respective final maturity dates. Failure to repay a note on the final maturity date represents an event of default under the trust documents. Voluntary prepayment rates in FFELP loan pools remain historically low as a result of sluggish economic growth and high unemployment rates among recent graduates. Although prepayments rose to 2%-3% of the loans in repayment in 2014, partly as a result of borrowers refinancing their FFELP loans through private student loans and Federal Direct consolidation loans, prepayments remain low relative to historical levels. Deferment and forbearance levels remain high throughout the life of the collateral pools. The collateral backing the paper is FFELP student l

‘Star Wars’ Actor Has Clear Vision of What Fans Would’ve Done If He’d Turned Down Role in New Trilogy

Source: wgso.com - Saturday, April 18, 2015

.com/blogger_img_proxy/ Story by the Associated Press; curated by Dave Urbanski ANAHEIM, Calif. (AP) — Mark Hamill knew he had to say yes when George Lucas told him about the plans to move forward with a new “Star Wars” trilogy. “It’s not like a choice. It’s like I was drafted,” Hamill told a massive crowd Saturday night at Star Wars celebration of his decision to reprise his role as Luke Skywalker in the “Star Wars: The Force Awakens.” Actor Mark Hamill at the 2015 “Star Wars” Celebration (Image source: YouTube) “Could you imagine if for some reason I said ‘I don’t think I want to do it?’ I would have all of you surrounding my house like villagers, angry villagers with lightsabers instead of torches,” joked the 63-year-old “Star Wars” veteran. Hamill admitted he was caught off guard when Lucas invited him to lunch. When Hamill’s wife surmised that perhaps there was a new film in the works, Hamill laughed. Lucas had told him specifically that he was done making “Star Wars” movies after the prequels. He assumed Lucas was going to announce a 3-D release or roll out another box set of the films, laughing about the number of versions that have been made available. Still, his interest was piqued when Lucas disinvited Hamill’s daughter. He knew that meant it must be big. When things started coming together, Hamill said he was cautiously optimistic about J.J. When You Meet the Star You Hate

Source: www.newyorker.com - Saturday, April 18, 2015

In my early adolescent years, I lived in Toronto, the fiefdom of the Maple Leafs, but my hockey loyalty, then as now, belonged to the New York Rangers, who in the immediate postwar years were blazing new highroads in mediocrity. The 1949-50 team somehow squeezed into the Stanley Cup playoffs, then continued gyrating so far over their heads that that they found themselves facing the mighty Detroit Red Wings, led by the immortal Production Line of Ted Lindsay, Sid Abel, and Gordie Howe, in the finals. My Broadway Blueshirts rode the bubble all the way to a seventh and deciding game at Olympia Stadium, in Detroit. Play careened through three regulation periods, followed by a twenty-minute overtime, with still no victor. A Ranger fanboy’s pathetic hopes held on through the eighth minute of the second overtime, when a journeyman Red Wing named Pete Babando got lucky with a shot, Lord Stanley’s basin went to Detroit, and I crept into that mental crypt where life’s failed Cinderellas go to mope. Enjoy bonsai exhibit April 25 in FWB

The Fort Walton Beach Bonsai Society is having their Spring Bonsai exhibit in cooperation with Bonsai Societies of Florida on April 25 from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Meridian at Westwood, 1001 Mar-Walt Drive in Fort Walton Beach. Lynn and Ed Fabian, Okaloosa County Master Gardeners and members of the Fort Walton Beach Bonsai Society, invite you to enjoy the art of bonsai in today’s article. At some point, someone thought their surroundings could be improved by planting a few flowers. From that small beginning, the world has seen the Hanging Gardens of Babylon, Monet’s gardens in France, botanical gardens in nearly every corner of the world and the garden you call your own. A garden may range from hundreds of acres of highly manicured grounds to large and small rooftop gardens in urban settings. Many an office desk has a vining philodendron adding a bit of green and violets bloom in profusion on windowsills. Even small spaces can hold a plant to nurture our love of growing things. It may be a terrarium on a shelf or an enclosed patio or courtyard filled with container gardens of delightful sights and scents. Evidence of plants in pots goes back several thousand years. About 1,000 years ago, records begin to show that people were turning plants in pots into an art form and this art form, called Bonsai in Japan or Penjing in Chi

The lowly TRS-80 doesn’t get much love in most circles; it’s constantly overshadowed by the popularity of the Apple II or computers that had graphics that weren’t terrible. For [Mike Loewen]’s VCF exhibit, he’s turning his TRS-80 into something good with SD card disk drives and custom graphics adapters. The -80 in question is a Model 4, the fancy all-in-one version that could run CP/M. The disk drives in this computer were replaced with half-height 5 1/4″ drives, the 200ns RAM was replaced with 100ns RAM and modified to get rid of the wait states, and a hard drive is emulated on a SD card adapter thanks to an add-on from [Ian Mavric]. [Ian] is somewhat prolific in the world of TRS-80s; he reverse engineered the original hi-res graphics board and reimplemented it with video RAM chips of a more modern vintage. Poll: Do You Have a Folder on Your iPad or iPhone for Useless But Unremovable Apple Apps? What is it Called?

Source: the-digital-reader.com - Saturday, April 18, 2015

.com/blogger_img_proxy/If you own an iDevice then you've probably noticed that Apple has been stuffing its mobile devices with more and more bloatware: apps which you don't need and cannot remove. I've certainly noticed the problem on my new iPad; in fact, I have a screen-full of apps which I mostly don't use: To be fair, I do use four of the 5 apps on the bottom bar, but I don't use the rest of the apps very much. And in the case of the Apple Watch, Newsstand, Maps, Contacts, Calendar, Photos, and Clock apps, I don't use them ever. Luckily there is a solution. Earlier this evening a tweet came down my timeline with a fix which is both simple and completely effective at reducing the clutter: Retweet if you have a folder on your iPhone where you put useless but unremovable Apple apps. — Michael Wolfe (@michaelrwolfe) April 15, 2015 iDevices have supported folders since iOS 4.2, but I'm embarrassed to say that I never thought of using them this way. And if you're not sure how to make a folder, you can find instructions on about.com . And do leave a comment with the name you put on the folder; my folder is named "Useless", but I'm looking to give it a different name. Perhaps I will call it "Tim Cook's Ego", or some such. LAHORE: Prime Minister’s Adviser on Foreign Affairs Sartaj Aziz has expressed wonder at the inordinate delay by India in resuming foreign secretaries-level talks between the two countries and urged New Delhi to start the dialogue for resolving various issues amid at creating peace in the region. “Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif after 2013 general elections had announced an economic and social development road map for the country through developing good relations with the neighbours, including India. Under this policy, the premier went to India and took part in the oath-taking ceremony of the India PM Narendra Modi. During their meeting on May 27 last year both premiers agreed to resume talks at foreign-secretaries level. And on Aug 25, India conveyed us about sending its foreign secretary to Islamabad in this regard,” Mr Sartaj said at seminar titled Muslim-Sikh Dosti Di Tarjman — Baisakhi (Besakhi represents Muslim-Sikh friendship) here on Saturday. He said the foreign ministry wondered when the India cancelled the talks on its own without consulting Pakistan. He said though the new Indian foreign secretary visited Pakistan on March 3 this year as a good will gesture, formal talks were yet to resume. He said Pakistan believed in peace in the region and desired to initiate dialogues on all issues with India and other countries. “If there will be peace, we all can eradicate the menace of poverty, illiteracy and injustice in the region

Russia tries to get economic jump on West

Source: www.wnd.com - Saturday, April 18, 2015

.com/blogger_img_proxy/WASHINGTON – Russia and Iran are moving past their historically rocky relationship with a new signal from Moscow that Tehran would be welcome in its Eurasian Economic Union, according to a report in Joseph Farah’s G2 Bulletin. Iran’s response is that a good first step would be “preferential tariff” agreements. The EEU widely has been perceived as Russian President Vladimir Putin’s cloaked effort to re-establish the former Soviet Union and compete head on with the troubled European Union. Now it appears to be a potential tool in Russia’s effort to get an economic jump on the West in any future business deals with Iran. Economic trade has been openly discussed as a possibility depending on a final agreement between Tehran and the West over its nuclear program. But now Russia apparently is trying to move to the head of the line. Read the full report at Joseph Farah’s G2 Bulletin. The overture to Tehran is from EEU Chairman Viktor Khristenko, who during a recent meeting with Iranian ambassador to Moscow Mehdi Sanayee called for Iran’s membership in the group. “We are willing to see Iran’s membership and its active and effective cooperation with the union,” Khristenko said, Fars News reported. The EEU is composed of Russia, Belarus, Kazakhstan and Armenia. Kyrgyzstan recently signed an agreement to join the union as of May after approval of its parliament. As a customs-free undertaking, the EEU is seen as a potential competition with

Christie: ‘We don’t know’ whether Obama cares about the US

Source: gantdaily.com - Saturday, April 18, 2015

New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie questioned Friday whether President Barack Obama cares about the United States, adding that, more than six years into Obama’s presidency, “we still don’t even know” who he is. “I feel like we really have had a President for the last six and a half years that we still don’t even know,” Christie said at a town hall event in Exeter, New Hampshire. “We don’t know what he really believes in. We don’t know what he really is willing to fight for. We don’t know whether he’s really willing to fight for anything.” Christie added: “We don’t know who he really likes or dislikes. We don’t know whether he really cares about his own party, or the other party, or about the country.” At the event, Christie also echoed many of the same points he’d made earlier in the day at a Republican Leadership Summit in Nashua, saying President Obama cares more about the “two L’s”—his library and his legacy—than about anything else. A source close to Christie told CNN Saturday that the comments at the town hall were in the same vein as what he’s said before about President Obama’s priorities. But Christie, in drawing a contrast between himself and the President on Friday night, appeared to question not just Obama’s priorities, but his patriotism. The comments stood in stark contrast to the cozy relationship Christie and President Obama have at times seemed to share, particularly in the aftermath of Hurricane Sandy. Christie’s emb

Finland goes to the polls, change of government expected

Source: http://ift.tt/eKERsB - Saturday, April 18, 2015

.com/blogger_img_proxy/ Helsinki (AFP) - Finns go to the polls on Sunday in legislative elections expected to oust the left-right government after a campaign that has focused heavily on how to lift Finland out of a three-year economic slump. Public opinion polls have predicted a resounding victory for the liberal-agrarian Centre Party leader Juha Sipila, a 53-year-old IT millionaire and newcomer to politics. Campaigning heavily on his business know-how, Sipila has vowed to get the economy back on track after three years of recession and stagnation, austerity and failed reforms. "Our country deserves better," Sipila wrote on his blog on Saturday. "Politics must be returned to a climate of trust." Elected to parliament in 2011, Sipila became party leader in 2012 when he was still virtually unknown to most Finns. In opposition since 2011, the Centre has recently been credited with around 24 percent of voter support. If its victory is confirmed on Sunday, Sipila's first task will be to pick his coalition partners. Tradition dictates that the largest party takes the post of prime minister and forms a government with the other largest parties to obtain a majority in parliament. Several weeks of thorny negotiations are expected before Sipila is able to present a coalition. Faced with the country's economic woes, "the government programme will be quite difficult to create," Helsinki University political history professor Juhana Aunesluoma predicted. Three parti

Wenger eyes Cup record after Arsenal edge into final

Source: http://ift.tt/eKERsB - Saturday, April 18, 2015

.com/blogger_img_proxy/ London (AFP) - Arsene Wenger set his sights on a record-breaking FA Cup triumph after holders Arsenal rode their luck to return to the final with a 2-1 win over Reading. Wenger's club will contest a record 19th FA Cup final against Aston Villa or Liverpool thanks to a howler from Reading goalkeeper Adam Federici, who allowed Alexis Sanchez's tame extra-time shot to squirm into the net to settle a tense semi-final at Wembley on Saturday. Federici's costly mistake allowed Arsenal to escape with a win they barely deserved from a performance that got progressively more disjointed after Garath McCleary's second half strike cancelled out Sanchez's 39th minute opener. Regardless of the manner of their progress, the result took Arsenal ahead of Manchester United on 19 FA Cup final appearances and a victory when they return to Wembley in May would give the north Londoners the trophy for the 12th time, breaking the record they currently share with United. With the Premier League title looking out of reach after Chelsea's win against United on Saturday, lifting the Cup would maintain the feelgood factor at the end of another season in which Arsenal have glimpses of greatness and moments of fallibility. "The records show you are consistent, that is the most difficult thing to do," Wenger said. "Overall any final is a 50-50, but if we can win and get the record that would be great. "Lets hope we have all our players available when we come bac

Source: http://ift.tt/ot3cHZ - Saturday, April 18, 2015

.com/blogger_img_proxy/ Android’s haptic feedback has always felt kind of gimmicky, but starting this week Google is making an effort to highlight the feature. The company recently introduced a new Play Store section that highlights “Games You Can Feel” on your smartphone or tablet. The new section includes 15 games, including Angry Birds Friends, Ninja Hero Cats, Drag Racing, a couple of Grand Theft Auto titles and even an air guitar app called Solo Air . Every app listed here was designed using tactile technology called TouchSense Engage from Immersion, a company focused on combining the technology with mobile devices. “Over the past few months, Immersion has worked closely with leading mobile game developers to customize tactile effects for their games,” said Jason Patton, general manager and vice president of Content and Media at Immersion. “From this effort, we are seeing a whole new user experience emerge – one that is more immersive and engaging for mobile game players. Touch technology advances game design, enabling developers to add tactile effects to create a more in-depth gaming experience.” You can peruse the “Games you can feel” section of Google Play by following the source link below.
