Labor Union Pulls Conference Out Of Indiana Over 'Religious Freedom' Law

Source: http://ift.tt/hFWySe - Monday, March 30, 2015

WASHINGTON -- The labor union AFSCME announced Monday that it is moving its 2015 Women’s Conference out of Indianapolis in October, in protest of the state's new "religious freedom" law that could open the door to discrimination against lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender individuals. "This un-American law allowing businesses to refuse service to gay and lesbian customers sets Indiana and our nation back decades in the struggle for civil rights. It is an embarrassment and cannot be tolerated," said Lee Saunder, president of the American Federation of State, County and Municipal Employees. "The 1.6 million members of AFSCME cannot in good conscience make such a sizeable financial investment in Indiana knowing that women and men in that state are deliberately being targeted for discrimination." Saunders did not specify where the conference will now be held. "AFSCME will relocate our Women’s Conference to a state to be determined as a sign of our disgust and disappointment with Governor Pence’s discriminatory law. We stand with the ever-growing number of businesses and associations who are taking similar action this week and demanding fairness for all in the state of Indiana," he said. Indiana has been facing a wave of criticism after the GOP-controlled legislature and Gov. Mike Pence (R) passed the Religious Freedom Restoration Act. The law would allow any individual or corporation to cite religious beliefs as a defense when sue

Have You Heard the Good News?

Source: http://ift.tt/hFWySe - Monday, March 30, 2015

In the wake of the financial crisis, President Obama took the helm of a sinking economic ship and help to right it. The unemployment rate is now once again at pre-recession levels -- the lowest in seven years (5.5%). President Obama's Administration, with only opposition from the Republicans, has steadily help put more than 11 million Americans back to work in the private sector. In the strongest period of American manufacturing job growth since the 1990s, the sector has added more than 750,000 jobs since February 2010. As New York Times columnist Paul Krugman notes, the economy is "now adding jobs at a rate not seen since the Clinton years." The dollar is on its fastest rise in 40 years ; its value has increased 14% in this first quarter alone and it's the strongest it's been in 12 years compared to the Euro. Maybe most important, the number of long-term unemployed is down by 1.1 million . Why are the Republicans so silent about the good news? They claim to be the party of "jobs." Perhaps they knew their history. PBS pointed out a study from the "strictly non-partisan National Bureau for Economic Research" that shows "under Democratic presidents, per capita GDP has been higher; job creation has been stronger; decreases in unemployment have been greater; the S&P 500 stock index has been higher; corporate profits have been bigger; and real wages and labor productivity have increased." As Brad Plumer also noted in the Washington Po

Amazon Home Services Launches Today

Source: hypebeast.com - Monday, March 30, 2015

Amazon has announced the launch of their highly anticipated Home Services web-based application. Presented as an online marketplace for industry professionals that can help you install, maintain and implement your various household purchases, the services offered are as varied as what you might expect to find on Amazon itself. From slightly mundane chores such as TV installation and routine cleaning to something as outlandish as hiring a silk aerialist, over 700 professional services are available and covered by Amazon's Happiness Guarantee . The company stated in their press release that, "In less than 60 seconds, customers can now browse, purchase and schedule hundreds of professional services" from a database of certified industry men and women that have been personally invited by Amazon, vetted accordingly and in possession of the relevant trade licenses. Currently available across most of the US, Amazon Home Services will match lower advertised prices for professionals and their services listed within its application and has roughly 2.4 million 'pre-packaged' plans that can be added to your cart. Considering Amazon started as an online book store some 20 years ago, they have come a long way and once again proven why they are one of the world's leading e-commerce platforms. Martin O’Malley hints he may run for president

Source: www.redstate.com - Monday, March 30, 2015

I am a minority of one among the contributors at RedState. I don’t believe Hillary Clinton CAN win the presidency for the simple reason that her only compelling cases for election are “I slept with Bill Clinton” and “You owe me.” She doesn’t have a natural constituency inside the Democrat party that is enthusiastic about voting for her, other than elderly far-left harpies. And I don’t believe Hillary Clinton CAN win a fight for the nomination if at least one breathing (mostly) person gets into the race. She is a very weak candidate who has never shown any interest in campaigning. If everyone bows out, she’ll take the job. Otherwise, I believe there is a very good chance she may not even run. This brings me to the second point on which I am a minority. Former Maryland governor, Martin O’Malley. If you watched the HBO series The Wire, you know Martin O’Malley. It was the character Thomas Carcetti played pitch perfect by Aidan Gillen . I lived in Maryland and blogged his defeat of Republican Bob Erhlich at my RedMaryland site . No one was surprised that he defeated Ehrlich (a fate that I am sure awaits incumbent Larry Hogan when there is no populist outpouring of resistance in 2018), that was sort of baked-in. What was masterful was the way he sand-socked his democrat rivals. When he took over state government, he moved quickly to install loyalists in key positions and ruthlessly excised any state employees who didn’t get with his p
