Daily Kos Elections Morning Digest: An old foe prepares for a rematch against Mike Pence

Source: www.dailykos.com - Wednesday, April 01, 2015

Indiana Gov. Mike Pence Leading Off : • IN-Gov : Republican incumbent Mike Pence hasn't exactly had the smoothest few days of his career, and his 2012 Democratic opponent sounds ready to pounce. Former state House Speaker John Gregg has been talking about seeking a rematch for a while, and his old campaign site now promises "[b]ig news is just around the corner!" And Gregg himself told the National Journal that the firestorm over the Religious Freedom Restoration Act has made him more likely to run , saying, "I was considering it, and this has only heightened my consideration of it." Gregg also says that business people and moderate Republicans angry at Pence's decision to sign the bill have been encouraging him to oppose the governor next year. A November poll gave Pence an intimidating 62-24 approval rating . But with Pence taking flack from all sides over the RFRA, it's no surprise that Democrats smell blood. Gregg lost the 2012 race by a surprisingly narrow 50-47 margin, and the governor hasn't exactly displayed sharp political instincts recently. Of course, it won't be easy to unseat a Republican incumbent in a conservative state (assuming Pence doesn't surprise us all and run for president instead of for re-election), and there will be plenty of time for Pence to put this whole matter behind him. But Gregg proved to be a tough candidate last time, and he'll have a better chance than almost any Hoosier Democrat of beating Pe

Anti-Gay Indiana Pizza Place Earns the Very Best Yelp Reviews

Source: www.adweek.com - Wednesday, April 01, 2015

You may have heard that things are getting tense over in Indiana as Governor Mike Pence tries to defend his anti-gay “religious freedom” law without contradicting himself. His strategy? Avoid a simple “yes or no” question for more than 10 minutes. A state pizza shop, however, tried to use the controversy to gin up business by telling reporters that, while they won’t deny service to a gay couple or members of another religion, they will reserve the right to refuse to cater a gay wedding…with their crappy pizza. Kevin O’Connor , whose family runs Memories Pizza of Walkerton, Indiana, made a shameless ploy for attention in seeking out the local ABC affiliate to let the world know that his business is totally anti-gay: “That lifestyle is something they choose. I choose to be heterosexual. They choose to be homosexual. Why should I be beat over the head to go along with something they choose?” Qualifiers aside, it’s hard to get more homophobic than that statement. Of course O’Connor’s wife and daughter tried to downplay it by telling ABC that they will gladly serve LGBT customers — after letting the world know how much they disapprove of “that lifestyle.” Did the stunt work? Sort of! Here are some reviews posted on the business’s Yelp page over the past 24 hours: Few if any of those writing have actually visited Memories Pizza. But one reviewer explains the logic behind his decision: Will Memories have to close? Probably not. But if i

Twitter Courtesy Has Been a Factor in Reducing Post-Election Violence in Nigeria

Source: time.com - Wednesday, April 01, 2015

For an election considered too close to call as Nigerians went to the polls en mass on Saturday morning, nothing was more surprising than the fact that for the first time in the country’s post-colonial history an opposition challenger succeeded in pushing out a sitting president via the ballot box. That and the fact that for all the dire predictions of doom and violence , the final results were accompanied by cheers and groans, not gloating and gunshots. Some of that just may be attributable to winning candidate Muhammadu Buhari’s remarkable Twitter feed , rife with positive thoughts and cheerful goodwill throughout. Winning candidate Muhammadu Buhari, who will be sworn in as President on May 29, praised his rival President Goodluck Jonathan for peacefully relinquishing power. “President Jonathan was a worthy opponent and I extend the hand of fellowship to him,” Buhari told a gathering at his campaign headquarters on Wednesday. For his part, Jonathan, a former Vice-President turned two-time President who many had assumed would never willingly give up power, was gracious in his defeat, saying in a statement, “I promised the country free and fair elections. I have kept my word.” He went on to encourage his supporters to stay calm and accept the results, no matter how disappointed. “Nobody’s ambition is worth the blood of any Nigerian. The unity, stability and progress of our dear country is more important than anything else.” While

See the Microsoft Surface 3 from every angle

Source: www.techradar.com - Wednesday, April 01, 2015

A closer look After skipping out on Microsoft's last big hardware event, which brought us the Surface Pro 3 , the Surface 3 is finally here. Since the Surface 2 , a lot has changed with Microsoft's latest tablet, including the screen going from a 16:9 aspect ratio to 3:2, along with that new kickstand and magnetically-latching keyboard. What's more, Microsoft has ditched Windows RT: the Surface 3 comes running full Windows 8.1. In many ways, the Surface 3 looks like a smaller clone of its Pro-status sibling, but let's take a tour around the new tablet to see what's new. The new display The most immediately noticeable change is the Surface 3's new 10.8-inch screen, which takes after the Pro's 3:2 aspect ratio. Sadly Microsoft didn't increase the resolution by much, but everything should look nice and sharp at 1,920 x 1,280. Kick it out Similarly, the kickstand has been upgraded, now with three points of articulation. You can now tilt the tablet all the way back to paint on the virtual canvas or more easily use the onscreen keyboard. The new magnetic keyboard Just in case you were wondering, the keyboard does indeed magnetize to the front lip of the Surface 3. This extra point of contact helps keep the Type Cover secure especially when you're typing with the device on your lap. A close look at the type cover Speaking of the Type Cover, here's a closer look. As you can see, it's pretty much identical to the Surface Pro 3's keyboard
