CoPIRG Releases ‘Trouble In Toyland’ Report For The Holidays

Source: denver.cbslocal.com - Monday, December 01, 2014

DENVER (CBS4) – Just in time for the holiday season the Colorado Public Interest Research Group (CoPIRG) released the annual Trouble in Toyland report that lists products that pose a safety hazard for children. Lisa Ritland with CoPIRG shows off dangerous toys (credit: CBS) CoPIRG has been publishing a yearly report of unsafe toys for almost 30 years. They say each year toys fall through the cracks such as a Fisher-Price Harley-Davidson toy that can be too loud for a child’s ears. A good way to measure if a toy is too small and could be a choking hazard for a child is to see if it fits inside a toilet paper roll. CoPIRG says they’ve contributed to more than 150 recalls, but they’re still seeing some major issues on the shelves, such as dangerous toxins, including low levels of lead and chromium. They are also finding choking concerns with small parts of toys, balls and balloons. Toy magnets and batteries are also major worries because ingestion can be fatal. Excessive noise is another issue the group says parents should watch. “Definitely check out our full list of hazardous toys that we found on store shelves,” Lisa Ritland with CoPIRG said. CoPIRG said they chose the Timbuk Toys store to announce the release of their report because the company is smaller and has made safety a priority. LINK: CoPIRG’s Trouble In Toyland Report

Dark and epic 'The Hobbit' finale premieres in London

Source: http://ift.tt/eKERsB - Monday, December 01, 2014

London (AFP) - Rich with special effects, the final installment of director Peter Jackson's "The Hobbit" trilogy debuted in a much-anticipated premiere in London on Monday. "The Hobbit: The Battle of the Five Armies" was filmed in 3D in a vivid 48 frames per second, and the final part of a trilogy reported to be the most expensive three-part series ever made. The premiere was also lavish, with the landmark Leicester Square cinema designed to look like ruins for the night and filled with giant screens showing excerpts from the film. Hundreds of fans gathered, many dressed as wizards and warriors, to ask for autographs and take photos with a star-studded cast that includes Orlando Bloom and Ian McKellan. "Excited, very excited to share it with fans, it's a very good end to the story, I saw it last night and I'm very pleased with it," said Martin Freeman, who stars as Hobbit Bilbo Baggins. Based J.R.R. Tolkien's 1937 book "The Hobbit", the trilogy tells the story of Baggin's journey with a group of dwarves to reclaim their Lonely Mountain homeland from Smaug the dragon, helped by the wizard Gandalf. Director Jackson had originally planned to interpret the book as a two-part film, but changed his mind to make a trilogy like the hugely-successful "Lord of the Rings" series, released between 2001 and 2003. In the film, Jackson replaces the original light and humorous tone with a darker feeling and sense of danger. Working with Tolkien'

Apps cannot use Push Notifications to send promotions, unless you’re Apple or anyone else

Source: www.marco.org - Monday, December 01, 2014

From Apple’s App Store rules : 5.6 Apps cannot use Push Notifications to send advertising, promotions, or direct marketing of any kind In practice, this rule is blatantly disregarded by thousands of apps that routinely violate it by sending promotional push notifications. It has become a widespread standard practice, even among small developers with lapses in judgment. It’s not hard to figure out why this rule isn’t enforced — it’s mostly unenforceable. A violation isn’t likely to be caught by Apple’s reviewers in the few minutes they spend with each app. Apple would need some sort of violation-reporting mechanism on each notification, which would add ugly clutter to the UI and would require a staff at Apple to go through each report and reliably act on abuses, neither of which Apple is ever likely to do. But we’ve reached a new low. This afternoon, Apple itself violated this rule: Regardless of the cause, this is clearly a promotion, will annoy thousands or millions of people, and is in direct violation of the least-enforced rule in the App Store. If Apple won’t enforce its own standards against spamming and annoying customers — which really isn’t good enough — the least they can do is practice the rules themselves and be a good example.

Sarah Palin Made A Funny About Ferguson

Source: wonkette.com - Monday, December 01, 2014

After having said pretty much nothing about the shooting of Michael Brown in Ferguson, Missouri, occasional reality television show front-woman Sarah Palin finally shared her thoughts with America over the weekend by reposting to her MyFacePlace page a joke from rightwing conspiracy website Mad World News. Get it? It’s funny because it’s true! Obama is so completely in favor of looting and lawlessness! If only he’d maybe say that looting is bad, but no, all he does is just make excuses for looters all the time, like when he told people to go out and burn down Ferguson last week, remember when he said that? Remember how he said, I join Michael’s parents in asking anyone who protests this decision to do so peacefully. Let me repeat Michael’s father’s words: “Hurting others or destroying property is not the answer.” Those were actually code words for “Burn stores and loot them,” because Obama also told all the illegal aliens that they could come across the border all over again and bring more illegal immigrants with them next time. Oh, also, some people made fun of the creative use of quotation marks in the photo, so Mad World News — you may remember them from such highly creative reporting moments as the time they turned a busload of completely legal farmworkers buying supplies with their completely legal pay into a bunch of illegals buying groceries with EBT cards — has issued a corrected joke version and a complaint that liberals
